Qualcomm interview questions - a complete guide
Qualcomm interviews look for a deep understanding of the C language and embedded concepts. Here are the questions that are reported again and again.
About Qualcomm
Qualcomm is known for wireless and mobile chips (such as smartphone processors and modems). In India, freshers usually join software, embedded and hardware engineering roles.
This guide covers 13 Qualcomm interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the Qualcomm interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.
Qualcomm hiring process
Step 1: Online assessment
Aptitude and CS fundamentals + C programming (networks, OS, computer architecture, data structures).
Step 2: Technical interviews
Coding and C-specific questions (volatile, memory layout, endianness), and projects.
Step 3: Hiring manager / HR
Projects, fit and HR at the end.
Qualcomm does not publish its fresher hiring process in detail (as of our check). This information is based on candidate reports and varies by role, city and drive - read the official job posting before you apply.

Qualcomm interview questions and answers
Embedded C
1.What does the volatile keyword do in C?
- What they're checking
- A classic embedded question.
- How to answer
- It tells the compiler the variable can change from outside (hardware, an interrupt, another thread) - so read it from memory every time and don't optimise it into a register.
2.Explain the memory layout of a C program.
- What they're checking
- Low-level understanding.
- How to answer
- Text (code), initialized data, BSS (uninitialized globals), heap (malloc, grows up), stack (function calls, grows down).
3.What is endianness? Show code to check it.
- What they're checking
- The link between hardware and data.
- How to answer
- Little endian - the low byte at the first address; big endian - the high byte first. int x = 1; if *(char*)&x == 1, it is little endian.
4.Set, clear and toggle the nth bit of a number.
- What they're checking
- Bit manipulation - everyday work with registers.
- How to answer
- Set: x | (1 << n). Clear: x & ~(1 << n). Toggle: x ^ (1 << n).
5.What is the difference between a mutex and a semaphore?
- What they're checking
- Concurrency.
- How to answer
- Mutex - one owner at a time, and whoever locks it unlocks it. Semaphore - keeps a count and lets several threads in, up to a limit.
Coding and OS
6.Check whether the brackets in a string are balanced.
- What they're checking
- A stack - reported in interviews.
- How to answer
- Push opening brackets, match the top on a closing one - the stack must be empty at the end.
7.Find the diameter of a binary tree.
- What they're checking
- Tree recursion.
- How to answer
- At each node, track the maximum of left height + right height; return the height.
8.What is an interrupt?
- What they're checking
- Embedded/OS basics.
- How to answer
- A hardware or software signal that stops the CPU to run a specific routine (the ISR) at once, then go back to what it was doing.
HR
9.Why Qualcomm?
- What they're checking
- Motivation.
- How to answer
- Your interest in mobile/wireless technology or chips - specific and true.
10.Tell me about your embedded/hardware project.
- What they're checking
- Hands-on work.
- How to answer
- The board, sensors, code and what you debugged - in detail.
More questions
11.What is the difference between a constant pointer and a pointer to a constant in C?
- What they're checking
- A classic of embedded C.
- How to answer
- const int *p - the value can't change, the pointer can. int *const p - the pointer can't change, the value can.
12.How does a static variable behave inside a function?
- What they're checking
- Storage classes.
- How to answer
- It keeps its value between calls - it is initialised only once.
13.Digital: what is the difference between a flip-flop and a latch?
- What they're checking
- Hardware basics.
- How to answer
- A latch is level-sensitive (changes while enable is high); a flip-flop is edge-triggered (only on the clock edge).
7-day preparation plan for the Qualcomm interview
- Day 1: C - pointers and memory layout.
- Day 2: volatile, const, static and storage classes.
- Day 3: Bit manipulation - 10 problems.
- Day 4: OS - interrupts, mutexes, semaphores, scheduling.
- Day 5: Computer architecture - cache and pipelining basics.
- Day 6: DSA - stacks, trees, linked lists.
- Day 7: A project deep dive and a mock.
Preparation tips
- Study C in depth: pointers, volatile, const, storage classes, memory layout.
- Understand the 10 common bit manipulation tricks rather than memorising them.
- Computer architecture and OS basics come up in the online test too.
Mistakes to avoid
- Getting stuck on 'basic' C questions - here the basics are asked in depth.
- Forgetting brackets in bit operations (operator precedence).
- Not knowing the hardware details of your embedded project.
Frequently asked questions
