About TCS

TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) is the Tata group's IT services company and one of the largest IT companies in India. Every year it hires a very large number of freshers through the TCS NQT, at different levels (Ninja, Digital, Prime).

This guide covers 17 TCS interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the TCS interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.

TCS hiring process

  1. Step 1: TCS NQT - Part A (Foundation)

About 75 minutes: Numerical Ability, Verbal Ability and Reasoning Ability - 25 minutes each. It checks basic aptitude, so speed and accuracy both matter.

  2. Step 2: TCS NQT - Part B (Advanced)

About 115 minutes: Advanced Quantitative & Reasoning (25 minutes) and Advanced Coding (90 minutes). This part matters a lot for higher roles such as Digital and Prime.

  3. Step 3: Interview

After the test comes the interview - technical, managerial and HR. Often all three happen in one panel. Your resume and project are discussed the most.

  4. Ninja, Digital or Prime

According to TCS's official page, this hiring focuses on Prime and Digital, and a Ninja offer depends on your performance in the process. In short: the stronger your test and interview, the higher the role.

The NQT sections and timings are from TCS's official NQT hiring page. The interview format (technical, managerial, HR) is commonly reported and can change from drive to drive - read your drive's notice.

TCS interview questions and answers

Technical round

Freshers are asked the basics - and about everything on their resume.

  1. 1.Tell me about your final year project.

    What they're checking
Whether you built the project yourself and understand it, or only remember its name.
    How to answer
In two minutes: what the problem was, your role, which technology you used and why, and the result. Be ready for follow-ups on anything you say.
    Example answer
“We built an attendance system for our college that takes attendance with face recognition. I did the backend and database work in Python and MySQL. Manual attendance used to take 10 minutes; now it takes 2.”
  2. 2.What are the four pillars of OOP? Explain with examples.

    What they're checking
Whether your programming fundamentals are clear.
    How to answer
Encapsulation, Abstraction, Inheritance, Polymorphism - a one-line definition and a small real example for each. Don't recite; say it in your own words.
  3. 3.What is the difference between an array and a linked list?

    What they're checking
    Basic understanding of data structures.
    How to answer
An array sits in contiguous memory with direct access by index; a linked list's nodes are joined by pointers - easy to insert and delete, but slow to access. Say when you would use each.
  4. 4.What is normalization in DBMS?

    What they're checking
Database basics - very common in the TCS technical round.
    How to answer
Organising tables to reduce duplicate data. Explain 1NF, 2NF and 3NF with a small student-course example.
  5. 5.Write a query for the second highest salary in an employees table.

    What they're checking
Whether you can actually write SQL.
    How to answer
A simple way: SELECT MAX(salary) FROM employees WHERE salary < (SELECT MAX(salary) FROM employees). If there is time, mention LIMIT/OFFSET or DENSE_RANK too.
  6. 6.What is the difference between a process and a thread?

    What they're checking
    Operating system basics.
    How to answer
A process has its own memory space; threads share the memory of one process. Threads are lighter but need synchronisation.
  7. 7.Write code to check whether a number is a palindrome.

    What they're checking
Whether you can turn simple logic into code.
    How to answer
Reverse the number digit by digit and compare it with the original. State the approach before coding, and test with an example like 121.
  8. 8.What is cloud computing? Explain IaaS, PaaS and SaaS.

    What they're checking
Awareness of modern tech, for Digital and Prime roles.
    How to answer
Renting computing resources over the internet. IaaS = servers/VMs, PaaS = a platform where you just deploy code, SaaS = ready software (like Gmail).

Managerial round

This round checks how you will work in a team and under pressure.

  1. 9.The deadline is close and one team member isn't doing their part. What do you do?

    What they're checking
    Team handling and maturity.
    How to answer
First talk to that person directly - there may be a problem. Offer help, redistribute the work, and tell the lead in time if needed. Don't give an answer that blames people.
  2. 10.Have you ever had a conflict in a team? How did you handle it?

    What they're checking
Whether you can handle conflict calmly.
    How to answer
Take a real example (a college project is fine). Say that you heard both sides, talked about facts, and what came of it.
  3. 11.Are you ready to work in shifts and at any location?

    What they're checking
Practical fit - common in IT services.
    How to answer
Answer honestly. If you are ready, say so clearly; if there is a genuine problem, explain it politely. A false answer becomes a problem after joining.
  4. 12.What if a client is unhappy with your work?

    What they're checking
    Client handling and attitude.
    How to answer
First understand the exact problem, admit any mistake, give a fix and a timeline, and keep your lead updated.

HR round

  1. 13.Tell me about yourself.

    What they're checking
Whether you can present yourself clearly and briefly.
    How to answer
One minute: what you are doing now, one achievement, and why TCS. Skip family history and long lists of hobbies.
  2. 14.Why TCS?

    What they're checking
Whether you did your research, and whether you will stay.
    How to answer
Don't say 'it's a big company'. Talk about the training, the chance to work across domains, or something specific you read - and link it to your career goal.
  3. 15.What are your strengths and weaknesses?

    What they're checking
    Self-awareness.
    How to answer
Give a short example with your strength. The weakness should be real but not critical for the job - and say how you are improving it.
  4. 16.Where do you see yourself in five years?

    What they're checking
    Ambition and stability.
    How to answer
Talk about skills and responsibility - becoming an expert in a technology and leading a team - things possible while staying at TCS.
  5. 17.Do you have any questions for us?

    What they're checking
    Interest and preparation.
    How to answer
Always ask one or two: what the training is like, what to expect in the first six months. Never say 'No, nothing'.

7-day preparation plan for the TCS interview

  1. Day 1: NQT Foundation - numerical ability (percentages, ratios, time and work) with a timer.
  2. Day 2: Verbal and reasoning - 25-minute sets.
  3. Day 3: Advanced quant and reasoning.
  4. Day 4: Advanced coding - three array and string problems.
  5. Day 5: OOP, DBMS and OS basics, plus SQL practice.
  6. Day 6: Your project in two minutes + HR answers (why TCS, shifts).
  7. Day 7: A full NQT mock and a review of your mistakes.

Preparation tips

  • Practise each NQT Foundation topic with a timer - 25 minutes goes very fast.
  • If you want Digital or Prime, give more time to Advanced Coding: arrays, strings and basic DP.
  • Put only what you can explain on your resume - the interviewer builds questions from it.
  • Before the interview, practise explaining your project in two minutes.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Losing time stuck on one question in the Foundation section.
  • Hoping for Digital/Prime but skipping Advanced Coding.
  • Listing a technology on your resume that you can't explain.
  • Answering 'Why TCS?' with something generic like 'it's a big company'.

Frequently asked questions

How many sections does the TCS NQT have?

Two parts: Part A (Foundation - Numerical, Verbal, Reasoning) and Part B (Advanced - Advanced Quantitative & Reasoning and Advanced Coding). Check the exact timings in your drive's official notice.

What is the difference between TCS Ninja, Digital and Prime?

They are different roles/levels. According to TCS's official page, a Ninja offer depends on your performance in the hiring process, and the Advanced section and interview matter more for the higher roles.
