AMD - interview guide

AMD interview questions - a complete guide

AMD's interviews ask software roles about C/C++, OS and architecture, and design roles about digital design and timing. Here is preparation for both.

About AMD

AMD makes CPUs (Ryzen, EPYC), GPUs (Radeon, the Instinct AI chips) and adaptive chips (from Xilinx). It has large design and software centres in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

This guide covers 13 AMD interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the AMD interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.

AMD hiring process

  1. Online test

Reported: programming MCQs and 2 coding questions.

  2. Technical interview

OOP, OS, networks, DSA; digital and STA for design roles.

  3. HR

    Fit and team preference.

AMD does not publish its India fresher interview process in detail (as of our check). This is based on candidate reports - many of them for experienced roles, so the fresher process can differ. Confirm with the recruiter.

AMD interview questions and answers

Architecture and CPU/GPU

  1. 1.What is out-of-order execution?

    What they're checking
The core of a modern CPU.
    How to answer
The CPU runs instructions as soon as their data is ready, not in program order - it doesn't hold the rest back waiting on a stalled one. Results are committed in order at the end (the reorder buffer).
  2. 2.What are chiplets and why does AMD use them?

    What they're checking
    AMD's distinctive design approach.
    How to answer
Several small chips joined in one package instead of one big chip. Small chips have better yield, different parts can use different processes, and scaling is cheaper.
  3. 3.Why is reading a row-major array by rows faster than by columns?

    What they're checking
    A practical understanding of caches.
    How to answer
A row's elements sit together in memory - several come in one cache line. Walking by column needs a new cache line each time - more misses.
  4. 4.What does a GPU driver do at a high level?

    What they're checking
    Software roles.
    How to answer
It turns commands from the OS/apps (DirectX, Vulkan) into commands the GPU understands, manages memory and schedules work on the GPU.
  5. 5.What does a context switch cost?

    What they're checking
    OS and performance.
    How to answer
Saving/loading registers and state, the scheduler's work, and above all cold caches and TLB afterwards. That is why too many switches hurt performance.

C/C++ and coding

  1. 6.What is sizeof(struct { char c; int i; }) and why?

    What they're checking
    Padding and alignment.
    How to answer
Usually 8: 3 bytes of padding after the char so the int sits on a 4-byte boundary. Ordering members from largest to smallest reduces padding.
  2. 7.What is the difference between const int* p and int* const p?

    What they're checking
    C/C++ precision.
    How to answer
const int* p - you can't change the value it points to, but you can move the pointer. int* const p - the pointer is fixed, the value can change.
  3. 8.Print a matrix diagonal by diagonal.

    What they're checking
    Handling indices.
    How to answer
On each diagonal i + j is the same. Loop d from 0 to (m + n - 2) and print the valid cells for that d; for a zig-zag, reverse alternate diagonals.

Design roles

  1. 9.How would you find a circuit's maximum clock frequency?

    What they're checking
    Timing.
    How to answer
The longest path (critical path): T = clock-to-Q + combinational delay + setup time (+ the effect of skew). Maximum frequency = 1/T.
  2. 10.What is Gray code and where is it used?

    What they're checking
    Digital design.
    How to answer
Only one bit changes between consecutive numbers. Used in async FIFO pointers and encoders - avoiding errors from several bits changing at once.
  3. 11.How would you fix a setup violation on a path?

    What they're checking
    Timing closure.
    How to answer
Reduce the logic or add a pipeline stage, use faster cells, shorten the wire (placement), or slow the clock - give the trade-off of each.

HR

  1. 12.Which team would you like to join - CPU, GPU or software?

    What they're checking
    Team fit.
    How to answer
A clear answer tied to your projects and interests, but flexible too.
  2. 13.Why AMD?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
Some AMD work on Ryzen/EPYC/Instinct or something about AMD's growth that appealed to you - specific.

7-day preparation plan for the AMD interview

  1. Day 1: Computer architecture - pipelines, out-of-order, caches.
  2. Day 2: C/C++ - pointers, const, structs, memory.
  3. Day 3: OS - scheduling, context switches, memory.
  4. Day 4: DSA - arrays, matrices, strings.
  5. Day 5: (Design) timing, critical paths, Gray code.
  6. Day 6: An online test mock.
  7. Day 7: A mock interview + HR.

Preparation tips

  • Software role: nail C/C++, OS and architecture.
  • Design role: digital design, timing and Verilog.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Getting stuck on basics like struct padding.
  • Preparing only DSA for a design role.
  • Knowing nothing about AMD's products.
