HR interview questions

HR interview questions and how to answer them

The HR round checks fit, motivation and communication more than technical skill. These are the questions that come up again and again, with what the interviewer is listening for.

  1. 1.Tell me about yourself.

    What they're checking
Whether you can give a clear, relevant summary - and what you choose to lead with.
    How to answer
Keep it to about a minute: your current role or studies, one achievement with a number, and why this job is the next step. Skip your life story.
    Example answer
“I'm a backend developer with three years at a fintech startup, where I built the payments service that now handles about two lakh transactions a day. I enjoy making systems reliable under load, and that's why this role on your platform team stood out to me.”
  2. 2.What are your strengths?

    What they're checking
Self-awareness, and whether your strengths match the job.
    How to answer
Pick two strengths the job description asks for and back each with a short example. Evidence beats adjectives.
    Example answer
“I'm good at breaking down messy problems. Last quarter our checkout was failing intermittently; I traced it to a timeout between two services, wrote it up, and the fix cut failures by 90%.”
  3. 3.What is your greatest weakness?

    What they're checking
Honesty, and whether you work on your gaps.
    How to answer
Name a real weakness that isn't central to the role, then say what you're doing about it. Avoid disguised strengths like "I work too hard".
    Example answer
“I used to hold back in large meetings, even when I had a useful point. I now prepare one thing to say before each meeting, and I've started presenting our team's updates every other week.”
  4. 4.Why do you want to work here?

    What they're checking
Whether you researched the company, and whether you'll stay.
    How to answer
Link something specific about the company - its product, customers or a recent launch - to what you want to do next.
  5. 5.Why should we hire you?

    What they're checking
Whether you can connect your experience to their needs.
    How to answer
Take the top two or three requirements from the job description and match each with something you've done.
  6. 6.Why are you leaving your current job?

    What they're checking
Red flags: conflict, blame or a habit of leaving early.
    How to answer
Stay positive and forward-looking - growth, scope or a new kind of problem. Never criticise your current employer.
  7. 7.Where do you see yourself in five years?

    What they're checking
Ambition, and whether your goals fit the role.
    How to answer
Describe the skills and responsibility you want to grow into, in a direction this job leads.
  8. 8.What are your salary expectations?

    What they're checking
Whether you're in budget, and how you negotiate.
    How to answer
Research the market range for the role and city. Give a range, with your figure at the lower end of it, and say you're open to the full package.
    Example answer
“Based on similar roles in Bengaluru, I'm looking at 18 to 22 lakh a year, but I'm open to discussing the complete package.”
  9. 9.What is your notice period?

    What they're checking
When you can start, and whether you're honest about it.
    How to answer
Give the exact period, and mention any buyout or early-release option only if it's real.
  10. 10.Do you have any questions for us?

    What they're checking
    Interest and preparation.
    How to answer
Always ask one or two: what success looks like in the first six months, how the team works, what the biggest challenge is right now.
