Nvidia interview questions - a complete guide
Nvidia is one of the biggest companies in GPUs and AI computing. Here is preparation for both software (C++, GPU programming) and hardware (digital design, timing) roles.
About Nvidia
Nvidia builds graphics cards (GPUs) and computing platforms for AI - most of today's AI models are trained on GPUs. In India, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad work on system software, tools, hardware design and verification.
This guide covers 13 Nvidia interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the Nvidia interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.
Nvidia hiring process
Online assessment / written test
MCQs on core concepts (C/C++, OS, architecture or digital) and coding questions - depending on the role.
Technical interviews
2-3 rounds - your resume and deep concepts; digital logic, VLSI and timing for hardware; C++, OS and DSA for software.
Managerial round
Behavioural, puzzles and scenario questions.
Nvidia does not publish its India fresher interview process in detail (as of our check). This is based on candidate reports - many of them for experienced roles, so the fresher process can differ. Confirm with the recruiter.

Nvidia interview questions and answers
GPU and parallel computing
1.What is the difference between a CPU and a GPU?
- What they're checking
- Nvidia's core.
- How to answer
- CPU - fewer but very powerful cores, for varied tasks. GPU - thousands of small cores, for doing the same work on lots of data at once (in parallel).
2.What are a thread, a block and a grid in CUDA?
- What they're checking
- GPU programming basics.
- How to answer
- Thread - does a small piece of work. Block - a group of threads that can share memory. Grid - a group of blocks that runs one kernel.
3.How would you parallelise matrix multiplication on a GPU?
- What they're checking
- Parallel thinking.
- How to answer
- Let each thread compute one output cell; bring tiles into shared memory to reduce repeated reads of global memory.
4.Why are GPUs used for AI training?
- What they're checking
- Understanding the industry.
- How to answer
- Neural networks involve huge numbers of matrix operations that can happen at the same time - exactly the parallel work a GPU does fast.
C/C++ and software
5.What are smart pointers in C++?
- What they're checking
- Memory management.
- How to answer
- unique_ptr (one owner), shared_ptr (reference counted), weak_ptr (non-owning) - memory is freed automatically.
6.What is the difference between stack and heap memory?
- What they're checking
- Low-level understanding.
- How to answer
- Stack - a function's local variables, freed automatically, small and fast. Heap - from new/malloc, freed manually or by a smart pointer, large.
7.How would you write a test plan for a tools/automation script?
- What they're checking
- Reported for tools development roles.
- How to answer
- What to test (features), normal and edge cases, invalid input, performance, and pass/fail criteria - in a table.
8.Find two numbers in an array with the maximum XOR.
- What they're checking
- Bit manipulation + a trie.
- How to answer
- Build a trie of the numbers' bits; for each number, go towards the opposite bits - that gives the maximum XOR.
Hardware and design
9.What is static timing analysis (STA)?
- What they're checking
- Reported for physical design roles.
- How to answer
- Checking the delay of every signal path without simulation, to see whether setup and hold times are met.
10.What is clock skew?
- What they're checking
- Digital design.
- How to answer
- The same clock reaching different flip-flops at different times - it affects timing.
11.Why is DFT (Design for Testability) important?
- What they're checking
- VLSI roles.
- How to answer
- Building test paths (such as scan chains) into the design in advance so faults can be caught after the chip is made.
Managerial
12.Puzzle: 9 balls, one heavier - how many weighings at minimum?
- What they're checking
- Logical thinking.
- How to answer
- Two: groups of 3-3-3; the first weighing finds the heavy group, the second finds the ball in it.
13.Why Nvidia?
- What they're checking
- Motivation.
- How to answer
- A genuine interest in GPUs, AI or graphics - something specific you read or built.
7-day preparation plan for the Nvidia interview
- Day 1: C++ - pointers, smart pointers, memory.
- Day 2: OS and computer architecture.
- Day 3: GPU and CUDA basics (threads, blocks, memory).
- Day 4: DSA - bits, tries, arrays.
- Day 5: (Hardware) digital logic, timing, STA.
- Day 6: Project deep dive and puzzles.
- Day 7: A mock interview.
Preparation tips
- Software role: C++ and OS in depth; GPU/CUDA basics are a bonus.
- Hardware role: digital logic, timing (setup/hold, STA) and Verilog.
- Every project on your resume in depth - interviews are reported to be resume-heavy.
- Solve puzzles and scenario questions while explaining your logic.
Mistakes to avoid
- No depth in a technology listed on your resume.
- Not understanding CPU vs GPU at a GPU company.
- Studying only DSA for a hardware role.
Frequently asked questions
