About Cadence

Cadence Design Systems builds EDA software and chip IP - tools for design, simulation and verification. It has large centres in Bengaluru, Pune and Noida.

This guide covers 12 Cadence interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the Cadence interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.

Cadence hiring process

  1. Online assessment

    Aptitude, technical MCQs and coding.

  2. Technical rounds (1-2)

Computer architecture, digital, OOP, OS, DSA and C++.

  3. HR / culture fit

    Behavioural and motivation.

Cadence does not publish its India fresher interview process in detail (as of our check). This is based on candidate reports - many of them for experienced roles, so the fresher process can differ. Confirm with the recruiter.

Cadence interview questions and answers

Digital and architecture

  1. 1.How does forwarding fix a data hazard in a pipeline?

    What they're checking
    Architecture.
    How to answer
Pass the previous instruction's result straight from the ALU output to the next instruction before it is written to the register. A load followed immediately by a use still needs one stall.
  2. 2.Why is two's complement used for negative numbers?

    What they're checking
    Number representation.
    How to answer
There is only one zero, and addition and subtraction work with the same adder. -x = invert all bits + 1.
  3. 3.Simplify F = Σm(0, 2, 8, 10) (4 variables A, B, C, D) with a K-map.

    What they're checking
    Digital basics.
    How to answer
    All four minterms have B = 0 and D = 0 - the four-corners group. F = B'D'.
  4. 4.How would you build a full adder from two half adders?

    What they're checking
    Combinational design.
    How to answer
The first half adder adds A and B (S1, C1), the second adds S1 and Cin (Sum, C2). Carry out = C1 OR C2.
  5. 5.What is a glitch (hazard) in a combinational circuit?

    What they're checking
    The effect of timing.
    How to answer
Different path delays make the output wrong for a moment. Adding an extra (redundant) group on the K-map removes a static hazard.
  6. 6.What is a testbench in verification?

    What they're checking
    Verification roles.
    How to answer
Code around the design that drives inputs, checks outputs and counts coverage - the design itself doesn't change. SystemVerilog/UVM are common in industry.

C++ and DSA

  1. 7.Why should a base class destructor be virtual?

    What they're checking
    C++ memory safety.
    How to answer
If you delete a derived object through a base pointer and the destructor isn't virtual, only the base destructor runs - the derived part leaks. With virtual, both run.
  2. 8.What are C++ templates and when would you use them?

    What they're checking
    Generic code.
    How to answer
The same code for different types - like max<T>. A version is generated per type at compile time. The STL containers are built on them.
  3. 9.What is the maximum number of meetings you can hold without overlap?

    What they're checking
    Greedy.
    How to answer
Sort by end time; take each meeting that starts after the previous one ends. O(n log n). Sorting by start gives a wrong answer - show it with an example.
  4. 10.Is a graph bipartite?

    What they're checking
    Graph colouring.
    How to answer
Colour with two colours using BFS/DFS; if any edge joins two nodes of the same colour, it isn't bipartite. Check each component separately.

HR and culture

  1. 11.When did you explain something technically hard to your team in simple terms?

    What they're checking
    Communication.
    How to answer
What you had to explain, which example or diagram you used, and how the team benefited.
  2. 12.Why Cadence?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
The role of EDA tools in the chip industry, and your VLSI/software interest - specific.

7-day preparation plan for the Cadence interview

  1. Day 1: Digital - K-maps, adders, muxes, hazards.
  2. Day 2: Computer architecture - pipelines, hazards, caches.
  3. Day 3: C++ - virtual destructors, templates, the STL.
  4. Day 4: DSA - greedy and graphs.
  5. Day 5: OS basics + the idea of verification.
  6. Day 6: An online test mock.
  7. Day 7: A mock interview + HR.

Preparation tips

  • Nail digital design (K-maps, adders, hazards) and architecture.
  • C++ questions on OOP and memory.
  • Practise greedy and graphs.
  • For a verification role, SystemVerilog basics.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Missing the corner groups in a K-map.
  • Not knowing why a destructor should be virtual in C++.
  • Sorting the wrong way in a greedy problem.
