About Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE)

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) makes servers, storage, networking (Aruba/Juniper) and a hybrid cloud platform (GreenLake) for companies. It has a large R&D centre in Bengaluru. (HP Inc. - the laptops and printers company - is a separate company.)

This guide covers 12 HPE interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the HPE interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) hiring process

  1. Online test

    Aptitude, technical MCQs and coding.

  2. Technical interviews (2)

OS, data structures, distributed computing, DP and graphs; Docker/Kubernetes for cloud roles.

  3. Managerial and HR

    Resume and behavioural.

HPE does not publish its India fresher interview process in detail (as of our check). This is based on candidate reports - many of them for experienced roles, so the fresher process can differ. Confirm with the recruiter.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) interview questions and answers

Cloud and distributed

  1. 1.What is the difference between a Docker image and a container?

    What they're checking
    Cloud roles.
    How to answer
An image is a read-only template (code + dependencies). A container is a running instance of that image - many containers from one image.
  2. 2.What is the difference between a pod and a deployment in Kubernetes?

    What they're checking
    Understanding Kubernetes.
    How to answer
A pod is the smallest unit - one or more containers together. A deployment says how many pods are needed and how to update/restart them.
  3. 3.What is the difference between liveness and readiness probes?

    What they're checking
    Production thinking.
    How to answer
Liveness fails = the container is stuck, restart it. Readiness fails = don't send traffic yet (such as while starting). Two different jobs.
  4. 4.Why does a distributed system need leader election?

    What they're checking
    Distributed computing.
    How to answer
Some work should be done by only one node (such as deciding the order of writes). If the leader crashes, the others choose a new one - with algorithms such as Raft.
  5. 5.What is edge computing and when is it useful?

    What they're checking
    HPE's 'edge-to-cloud' focus.
    How to answer
Processing data where it is produced (a factory, a store) - saving the delay and cost of sending it to the cloud. Useful when decisions are needed instantly.

OS and systems

  1. 6.What is the difference between a mutex and a spinlock?

    What they're checking
    OS sync.
    How to answer
If a mutex isn't available, the thread sleeps (the CPU is free). With a spinlock the thread keeps checking in a loop - fine for very short waits, wasteful of CPU for long ones.
  2. 7.Why do servers use ECC memory?

    What they're checking
    Hardware reliability.
    How to answer
ECC memory corrects a single-bit error automatically and detects a double-bit one - protecting servers from data being corrupted silently.
  3. 8.How would you run a program as a systemd service on Linux?

    What they're checking
    Practical Linux.
    How to answer
A .service file (ExecStart, Restart=on-failure, User) in /etc/systemd/system, then systemctl daemon-reload, enable and start.

DSA

  1. 9.The minimum-sum path from the top-left to the bottom-right of a grid (moving only right/down).

    What they're checking
    DP.
    How to answer
dp[i][j] = grid[i][j] + min(dp[i-1][j], dp[i][j-1]). Handle the first row and column separately. One row's array saves space.
  2. 10.Which single link, if broken, would split the network in two?

    What they're checking
    Graphs - bridges.
    How to answer
    Discovery times and low values in DFS; edge (u, v) is a bridge if low[v] > disc[u]. Tarjan's algorithm, O(V + E).

Managerial

  1. 11.If you had to build your project again, what would you do differently?

    What they're checking
    Resume deep dive.
    How to answer
One or two real weaknesses (design, testing, scale) and the better way - it shows maturity.
  2. 12.Why HPE?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
Your interest in hybrid cloud, servers or networking - a project or course.

7-day preparation plan for the Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) interview

  1. Day 1: OS - sync, memory, scheduling.
  2. Day 2: Docker and Kubernetes - containerise a small app.
  3. Day 3: Distributed computing - leader election, replication.
  4. Day 4: DP - grid and sequence problems.
  5. Day 5: Graphs - BFS/DFS, bridges.
  6. Day 6: An online test mock.
  7. Day 7: A mock interview + managerial.

Preparation tips

  • For cloud roles, Docker and Kubernetes basics - by running them yourself.
  • OS sync and distributed computing concepts.
  • Practise DP and graphs - reported in interviews.
  • A deep dive into every project on your resume.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Treating HPE and HP Inc. as the same company.
