About Micron

Micron Technology makes DRAM and NAND flash memory - used in phones, laptops, data centres and AI servers (HBM). In India it has a large centre in Hyderabad, and an assembly and test facility in Gujarat (Sanand).

This guide covers 12 Micron interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the Micron interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.

Micron hiring process

  1. Online assessment

Reported: aptitude, Python, data mining/ML MCQs and 2 coding questions.

  2. Technical interview

Projects, OS, networking and concepts for the role.

  3. HR

    Fit and expectations.

Micron does not publish its India fresher interview process in detail (as of our check). This is based on candidate reports - many of them for experienced roles, so the fresher process can differ. Confirm with the recruiter.

Micron interview questions and answers

Memory concepts

  1. 1.What is the difference between DRAM and NAND flash?

    What they're checking
    Micron's core product.
    How to answer
DRAM is fast but loses data when power goes (volatile) - used as RAM. NAND is slower but keeps data (non-volatile) - for SSDs and phone storage.
  2. 2.Why does DRAM have to be refreshed again and again?

    What they're checking
    Device-level understanding.
    How to answer
Each bit is a charge in a tiny capacitor that slowly leaks. It has to be read and rewritten every few milliseconds.
  3. 3.What is wear leveling in an SSD?

    What they're checking
    Storage engineering.
    How to answer
Each flash block can be written only so many times. The controller spreads writes evenly across blocks so no block wears out early.
  4. 4.Why is HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) important for AI servers?

    What they're checking
    An industry trend.
    How to answer
AI chips need huge amounts of data per second. HBM stacks memory right next to the chip with a very wide path - many times the bandwidth.
  5. 5.What is wafer yield and how is it related to defects?

    What they're checking
    Manufacturing data roles.
    How to answer
The percentage of good chips from a wafer. Yield falls as defects rise and as chips get bigger - which is why finding defect patterns in data matters.

Python, data and coding

  1. 6.What is a Python generator and how does it save memory?

    What they're checking
    Python MCQs in the OA.
    How to answer
It yields values one at a time with yield, without building the whole list in memory. Perfect for large files or streams.
  2. 7.How would you catch outliers in manufacturing sensor data?

    What they're checking
    Data roles.
    How to answer
The IQR rule (below Q1 - 1.5 x IQR or above Q3 + 1.5 x IQR) or a z-score. Plot first, and think before removing an outlier - sometimes it is the real defect.
  3. 8.How does a decision tree choose a split?

    What they're checking
    ML MCQs.
    How to answer
For each feature/threshold it checks how 'pure' the groups are after splitting - Gini impurity or entropy (information gain). The best split is chosen.
  4. 9.Find the first and last positions of a target in a sorted array.

    What they're checking
    Binary search variants.
    How to answer
Two binary searches - go left on a match in one (first), right in the other (last). O(log n).

OS, networking and HR

  1. 10.Which is better for page replacement, LRU or FIFO, and why?

    What they're checking
    OS.
    How to answer
LRU is usually better - it evicts the page not used recently. FIFO evicts the oldest even if it is used constantly; FIFO also has Belady's anomaly.
  2. 11.How many devices can get an IP in a /24 subnet?

    What they're checking
    Networking basics.
    How to answer
    32 - 24 = 8 bits, i.e. 256 addresses; minus the network and broadcast addresses, 254 hosts.
  3. 12.Why Micron?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
The growing role of memory and AI hardware, semiconductor growth in India, and a related project or course of yours.

7-day preparation plan for the Micron interview

  1. Day 1: Python - generators, comprehensions, data types.
  2. Day 2: ML basics - classification, trees, metrics.
  3. Day 3: Memory concepts - DRAM, NAND, SSD, HBM.
  4. Day 4: DSA - binary search, arrays - five problems.
  5. Day 5: OS and networking.
  6. Day 6: Aptitude + a timed OA mock.
  7. Day 7: Projects and HR.

Preparation tips

  • Prepare Python and basic ML/data mining MCQs - reported in the OA.
  • Understand the basics of DRAM, NAND and SSDs.
  • The fundamentals of OS and networking.
  • pandas and statistics for data roles.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Ignoring the OA's ML/data MCQs.
  • Not knowing the difference between DRAM and flash at a memory company.
  • Removing outliers in a data project without thinking.
