BlackRock interview questions and answers

Finance and risk

  1. 1.What is Aladdin?

    What they're checking
    BlackRock's main technology platform.
    How to answer
An investment management platform - portfolios, risk, trading and operations in one place. Used by BlackRock itself and other institutions.
  2. 2.How does diversification reduce risk?

    What they're checking
    Portfolio basics.
    How to answer
Money in different things whose prices don't fall together (low correlation). When one falls, another holds - the overall swings get smaller.
  3. 3.Why does the price of old bonds fall when interest rates rise?

    What they're checking
    Understanding fixed income.
    How to answer
New bonds now pay more interest, so nobody pays full price for an old bond paying less - its price falls. The effect is bigger for long maturities.
  4. 4.What is the difference between an ETF and a mutual fund?

    What they're checking
    BlackRock makes iShares ETFs.
    How to answer
An ETF trades on a stock exchange like a share all day. A mutual fund's price (NAV) is set once a day. ETFs usually track an index and are cheaper.
  5. 5.What is volatility and how is it measured?

    What they're checking
    The basics of risk.
    How to answer
How much returns move up and down - the standard deviation of returns. From daily to annual: x sqrt(252).

Puzzles and probability

  1. 6.Puzzle: two ropes, each burns in 1 hour but unevenly - how do you measure 45 minutes?

    What they're checking
    Reports mention hard puzzles.
    How to answer
Light the first rope at both ends and the second at one end. The first finishes in 30 minutes - then light the second's other end too; its remaining half hour burns in 15 minutes. 45 in total.
  2. 7.A coin is tossed 3 times - what is the probability of at least 2 heads?

    What they're checking
    Probability.
    How to answer
    8 outcomes; exactly 2 heads - 3, three heads - 1. 4/8 = 1/2.

Coding and data

  1. 8.How much do you buy/sell to bring a portfolio back to its target weights (such as 60% equity, 40% bonds)?

    What they're checking
    Finance + coding.
    How to answer
Find the total value; each asset's target = total x weight; target - current value = buy (positive) or sell (negative). Mention rounding and transaction costs.
  2. 9.Compute a K-day moving average of stock prices.

    What they're checking
    Sliding window.
    How to answer
The sum of the first K, then add each new day and subtract the oldest. O(n). No value for the first K-1 days.
  3. 10.How would you handle daily returns and missing days in pandas?

    What they're checking
    Data roles.
    How to answer
Returns with df['price'].pct_change(). There is no trading on holidays - don't fill those with zero; forward fill if needed, and say why.

HR

  1. 11.When did you spot a risk early and change the plan?

    What they're checking
    Risk thinking.
    How to answer
What the risk was, how you caught it, what you changed, and what was saved.
  2. 12.Why BlackRock?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
The impact on people's retirement and savings, a technology platform like Aladdin, and the meeting of finance and tech - specific.
