Fidelity Investments interview questions and answers
Technical
1.Why are new APIs built with REST more often than SOAP these days?
- What they're checking
- REST/SOAP has been asked in reports.
- How to answer
- REST is lighter - HTTP and JSON, easy for browsers and mobile, cacheable. SOAP is XML-based with a strict contract - still found in older enterprise/banking systems.
2.What is the time complexity of two nested loops (i from 0 to n, j from i to n)?
- What they're checking
- Big-O has come up in reports.
- How to answer
- The inner loop runs n, n-1, ... 1 times - n(n+1)/2 in total, i.e. O(n^2). Constants and smaller terms are dropped in Big-O.
3.Where do all the anagrams of one string start inside another string?
- What they're checking
- Sliding window + counting.
- How to answer
- Count the pattern's characters; slide a window of the pattern's length over the text and update the counts. When the counts match, note the index. O(n).
4.Why was Optional added to Java?
- What they're checking
- Avoiding nulls.
- How to answer
- So a method clearly says the value may or may not be there - fewer NullPointerExceptions. Cleaner code with methods like orElse and map. Use it as a return type, not in fields.
5.SQL: each fund's daily return (today's NAV vs yesterday's).
- What they're checking
- The LAG window function.
- How to answer
- (nav - LAG(nav) OVER (PARTITION BY fund_id ORDER BY nav_date)) / LAG(...) x 100. The first day's return will be null.
6.What does an API gateway do in microservices?
- What they're checking
- Architecture.
- How to answer
- A single entry point for all requests - routing, login checks, rate limiting, logging. The client doesn't need to know the internal services.
Finance and aptitude
7.How is a fund's NAV calculated each day?
- What they're checking
- Fidelity's business.
- How to answer
- (Market value of all the fund's holdings + cash - expenses/liabilities) / total units. Every day after the market closes.
8.An SIP of 5,000 rupees every month - write a function for the value at the year's end.
- What they're checking
- Finance + coding.
- How to answer
- Each month, grow the previous value by that month's return and add 5,000 - a loop of 12. There is a formula too, but the loop is clear and easy to test.
9.A fund first rose 10%, then fell 10% - what happened overall?
- What they're checking
- An aptitude trap.
- How to answer
- 100 -> 110 -> 99. So a 1% loss, not zero - the 10% fall applied to a bigger amount.
HR and behavioural
10.What do you know about Fidelity?
- What they're checking
- A common HR question in reports.
- How to answer
- What Fidelity Investments does (retirement, funds, brokerage), the role of the India centres, and one thing you liked. Know the difference from Fidelity International too.
11.When did you earn someone's trust or show honesty when it was hard?
- What they're checking
- Trust matters most at an investment company.
- How to answer
- The situation, what you did, and the result - specific.
12.What new feature would you build in a retirement planning app?
- What they're checking
- Product thinking.
- How to answer
- A user problem (such as 'I don't know how much to save'), your feature (a simple goal calculator), and how you would measure that it worked.
