Mastercard interview questions and answers
Payments and security
1.What is the difference between symmetric and asymmetric encryption?
- What they're checking
- Security basics.
- How to answer
- Symmetric - one key locks and unlocks (AES), fast. Asymmetric - lock with the public key, unlock with the private one (RSA) - used to share keys. HTTPS uses a mix of both.
2.What is PCI DSS?
- What they're checking
- The rules for card data.
- How to answer
- A security standard for companies that hold card data - encryption, access control, network security, logging and regular testing. Storing a card's CVV is forbidden.
3.What is the difference between rules and an ML model for catching card fraud?
- What they're checking
- Mastercard's services.
- How to answer
- Rules (such as payments from 2 countries within 5 minutes) are easy to understand but miss new tricks. ML learns patterns but is hard to explain. In practice, both together.
4.SQL: each merchant's refund rate for last month.
- What they're checking
- Payments analytics.
- How to answer
- GROUP BY merchant_id over last month's transactions, SUM(CASE WHEN type = 'refund' THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) / COUNT(*). Watch for division by zero and use only completed transactions.
DBMS and backend
5.What do COMMIT, ROLLBACK and SAVEPOINT do in a transaction?
- What they're checking
- DBMS transactions have been asked in reports.
- How to answer
- COMMIT makes the changes permanent, ROLLBACK undoes everything, SAVEPOINT marks a point you can roll back to. Example: money left one account but didn't reach the other - roll back.
6.How would you handle errors in one place in a Spring Boot REST API?
- What they're checking
- Backend practice.
- How to answer
- Turn each exception into the right status code and a clean JSON message with @ControllerAdvice + @ExceptionHandler. Don't show internal details (stack traces) to the user.
7.Sync (REST) or async (queue) communication between microservices - when to use which?
- What they're checking
- Design.
- How to answer
- Sync when you need an answer at once (such as a balance check). An async queue when the work can happen later or many services need to know (such as a receipt email) - services can fail independently.
DSA
8.The median of two sorted arrays in O(log n) - explain the partition idea.
- What they're checking
- Hard binary search.
- How to answer
- Binary search a partition on the smaller array: the max of the left parts <= the min of the right parts. Then the median depends on whether the total is odd or even.
9.How many brackets must be added to make a string valid?
- What they're checking
- A stack/counter.
- How to answer
- Count open brackets; when a ')' comes with none open, one '(' must be added. At the end, add as many ')' as there are open ones left. The total of both.
HR and manager
10.How would you answer a recorded video interview like HireVue?
- What they're checking
- A video round has been reported.
- How to answer
- Good light and a quiet place, look at the camera, each answer 1-2 minutes in STAR. Record yourself answering practice questions and watch them.
11.When did you resolve a technical disagreement with someone using data?
- What they're checking
- Teamwork.
- How to answer
- What the disagreement was, which data or test settled it, and how the relationship stayed good.
