Arcesium interview questions - a complete guide
Arcesium's technical rounds are reported to go from medium to hard - questions like a shortest path on a grid. Here is preparation for DSA, Java and design.
About Arcesium
Arcesium builds a data and operations technology platform for hedge funds and asset managers - trades, positions, accounting. It started within the D. E. Shaw group. It has large centres in Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
This guide covers 12 Arcesium interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the Arcesium interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.
Arcesium hiring process
Online test
Reported: 3 medium coding questions.
Technical round 1
One medium and one hard problem.
Technical round 2
Hard DSA (such as Dijkstra on a grid), OS, Java and SQL.
Hiring manager
System design and projects.
Arcesium does not publish its India fresher interview process in detail (as of our check). This is based on candidate reports - many of them for experienced roles, so the fresher process can differ. Confirm with the recruiter.

Arcesium interview questions and answers
DSA
1.Each grid cell has a cost - the cheapest path from the top-left to the bottom-right (moving in all four directions).
- What they're checking
- Dijkstra on a grid has been reported.
- How to answer
- With four directions, simple DP doesn't work (cycles). Treat cells as nodes and run Dijkstra - (cost, r, c) in a min-heap. O(mn log mn).
2.Find the maximum of every window of size K with a deque.
- What they're checking
- A monotonic deque.
- How to answer
- Indices in a deque with values decreasing. When a new one comes, drop smaller ones from the back; drop the out-of-window one from the front; the front is the max. O(n).
3.The shortest path from one word to another, changing one letter at a time (through dictionary words).
- What they're checking
- Graph BFS.
- How to answer
- Each word a node; a one-letter difference = an edge. Levels with BFS. To go faster, group words by pattern (h*t).
4.Match trades from two systems (reconciliation) - which ones differ?
- What they're checking
- Arcesium's real work.
- How to answer
- A hash map by trade ID (or key fields); compare records from both sides - only on one side, or different fields (quantity, price). Three buckets in the report.
Java, OS and SQL
5.What is the difference between volatile and synchronized in Java?
- What they're checking
- Concurrency.
- How to answer
- volatile only gives visibility - what one thread writes is seen by another at once; it isn't atomic (count++ isn't safe). synchronized gives both visibility and one-thread-at-a-time (mutual exclusion).
6.Why use an ExecutorService in Java instead of a new Thread() for every task?
- What they're checking
- Practical concurrency.
- How to answer
- Creating threads is expensive; a thread pool reuses threads, limits their number and returns results/errors through a Future. Always call shutdown() at the end.
7.How does copy-on-write save memory after fork()?
- What they're checking
- OS.
- How to answer
- Parent and child share the same pages at first (marked read-only). A page is copied only when one of them writes - not the whole memory.
8.SQL: the net quantity (buy - sell) of each security in each fund.
- What they're checking
- Positions - domain SQL.
- How to answer
- GROUP BY fund_id, security_id, SUM(CASE WHEN side = 'BUY' THEN qty ELSE -qty END). Ask whether zero positions should be shown.
Design and HM
9.Design a system that computes P&L (profit/loss) from millions of trades at end of day.
- What they're checking
- Hiring manager system design.
- How to answer
- Ingest trades and prices, update positions, P&L per position (realised + unrealised), parallel batches by fund, checkpoints, and reconciliation of the numbers. The deadline is before morning.
10.What does Arcesium do, and how is it related to D. E. Shaw?
- What they're checking
- Understanding the company.
- How to answer
- A back/middle office platform for investment firms - trades, positions, accounting, data. It started within the D. E. Shaw group and now serves clients as a separate company.
11.Tell me about a hard problem where you changed your approach after a hint.
- What they're checking
- Coachability.
- How to answer
- What you were thinking first, what the hint was, and how you moved to the new path - not ego, learning.
12.Why Arcesium?
- What they're checking
- Motivation.
- How to answer
- Hard problems in finance and data, and the level of engineering - specific.
7-day preparation plan for the Arcesium interview
- Day 1: Graphs - Dijkstra on a grid, BFS.
- Day 2: Sliding window maximum, deques, heaps.
- Day 3: Hard problems - two, timed.
- Day 4: Java concurrency + OS.
- Day 5: SQL - positions, aggregation.
- Day 6: Design - EOD batch, reconciliation.
- Day 7: A full mock (medium + hard) + hiring manager.
Preparation tips
- Hard DSA - Dijkstra variants, monotonic deques, BFS.
- Java concurrency and OS basics.
- SQL aggregation on finance data.
- Batch processing and reconciliation in design.
Mistakes to avoid
- Applying DP to a grid with four directions.
- Treating volatile as a thread-safe counter.
- Not even stating the brute force on a hard problem.
