Visa interview questions - a complete guide
Visa runs the world's largest card payments network. Its interviews look for an understanding of payments, security and scale alongside DSA.
About Visa
Visa is a payments network - when you pay with a Visa card, Visa carries the messages and the money accounting between your bank and the shop's bank. It has a large technology centre in Bengaluru.
This guide covers 13 Visa interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the Visa interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.

Visa interview questions and answers
Understanding payments
1.What happens between swiping a card and the money reaching the shop?
- What they're checking
- Visa's core business.
- How to answer
- Authorization: the shop's bank (acquirer) asks the card's bank (issuer) through the Visa network - is there money? yes/no. Later clearing (the accounting) and settlement (the actual money) - usually at the end of the day.
2.What is card tokenization?
- What they're checking
- Payments security.
- How to answer
- A token (a different number) is stored and used instead of the real card number - as in phone wallets. If the token leaks, the real card is still safe; a token is limited to one device/merchant.
3.Write the code for a Luhn check - is a card number valid?
- What they're checking
- Practical coding.
- How to answer
- Double every second digit from the right (subtract 9 if it goes above 9), add all the digits - if the total divides by 10, it is valid. This only catches typing mistakes, not whether the card is real.
4.How would you keep an authorization API's response under 100 milliseconds?
- What they're checking
- Low latency at scale.
- How to answer
- Fewer network hops on the path, key data in memory/cache, heavy work (reports, emails) async, timeouts, and servers close to regions. Measure p99 latency, not the average.
5.How would you check a card's daily spending limit when requests reach different servers?
- What they're checking
- Distributed counters.
- How to answer
- Partition by card ID so one card's requests go to one place, or an atomic counter (Redis INCRBY) that expires daily. Check and update in one atomic step.
DSA and CS
6.Find the longest zero-sum subarray in an array of transaction amounts.
- What they're checking
- Prefix sums.
- How to answer
- Keep the first index of each prefix sum in a map. When the same prefix comes again, the part in between sums to zero - length = i - first index. O(n).
7.How would you keep the top K merchants (by volume) from a stream of transactions?
- What they're checking
- Heaps + hashing.
- How to answer
- Each merchant's total in a map; when asked, top K with a min-heap of size K. For very large data, take each partition's top K and merge.
8.OOP design for three payment methods - card, UPI and wallet.
- What they're checking
- Interfaces.
- How to answer
- A PaymentMethod interface (authorize, refund); a class for each method. The checkout code knows only the interface - adding a new method is easy (Open/Closed).
9.What is the difference between optimistic and pessimistic locking?
- What they're checking
- DBMS concurrency.
- How to answer
- Pessimistic - lock when reading, others wait. Optimistic - no lock, check the version on update; if it changed, retry. With few conflicts, optimistic is faster.
10.How do you keep payments working even if an entire region goes down?
- What they're checking
- Cloud and availability.
- How to answer
- Active servers in several regions, data replication, health checks to shift traffic to another region, and regular failover drills.
Managerial and HR
11.When did you put security above speed?
- What they're checking
- Trust comes first in payments.
- How to answer
- A situation where there was a shortcut but you chose the right way - what the risk was and the result.
12.Did your project run into a scale or performance problem?
- What they're checking
- Resume deep dive.
- How to answer
- What the problem was, how you measured it, what you changed and how much difference it made - with numbers.
13.Why Visa?
- What they're checking
- Motivation.
- How to answer
- The global scale of payments, and the growing use of digital payments in India - specific.
7-day preparation plan for the Visa interview
- Day 1: Payments basics - the card flow, tokenization, Luhn.
- Day 2: Arrays and prefix sums - five problems.
- Day 3: Heaps and hashing - top K.
- Day 4: OOP and DBMS concurrency.
- Day 5: System design - low latency, multi-region.
- Day 6: An online test mock (timed).
- Day 7: Managerial stories + a mock.
Preparation tips
- Understand the card payment flow (authorization, clearing, settlement).
- Medium DSA - prefix sums, heaps, hashing.
- Talk about latency, availability and security in design.
- Remember the numbers in your resume projects.
Mistakes to avoid
- Not understanding the payment flow at a payments company.
- Not mentioning security in design.
- Treating the Luhn check as real verification of a card.
