Bank of America interview questions and answers

Java and OOP

  1. 1.Why would you keep the balance private in a BankAccount class?

    What they're checking
    Encapsulation with a banking example.
    How to answer
So nobody can change the balance directly. Changes happen only through deposit/withdraw methods, where the rules are checked (no negative amounts, balance can't go below zero).
  2. 2.Two threads withdraw from the same account at once - what can go wrong and how do you stop it?

    What they're checking
    Multithreading.
    How to answer
If both check the balance and then withdraw, the account can go negative. Make withdraw synchronized or take a lock, so the check and update happen together.
  3. 3.How does a HashSet prevent duplicates (and what if equals/hashCode aren't overridden)?

    What they're checking
    Collections.
    How to answer
It uses a HashMap inside - hashCode picks the bucket, then equals() compares. If your class doesn't override both, duplicates get in.
  4. 4.Write a function that calculates compound interest.

    What they're checking
    Banking maths.
    How to answer
    A = P x (1 + r/n)^(n x t); interest = A - P. Convert r from a percentage to a decimal. BigDecimal for money.

SQL and DSA

  1. 5.SQL: find customers whose every account has a balance below 1000.

    What they're checking
    Aggregation logic.
    How to answer
GROUP BY customer_id HAVING MAX(balance) < 1000. Explain that 'every account' means even the largest is below 1000.
  2. 6.Replace each element of an array with the largest element to its right (the last with -1).

    What they're checking
    Reverse traversal.
    How to answer
Walk from the back keeping the max so far; replace each element with the max, then update the max. O(n).
  3. 7.Can one string be made into another by replacing characters one-to-one?

    What they're checking
    Hash maps (isomorphic strings).
    How to answer
Keep two maps - s to t and t to s. If any mapping conflicts, no. If the lengths differ, no straight away.
  4. 8.What three things would you say in a daily standup?

    What they're checking
    Working in an Agile team.
    How to answer
What you did yesterday, what you will do today, and whether you are blocked - in a minute. Long technical discussions happen separately later.

Test, telephonic and HR

  1. 9.How would you get faster at the AMCAT logical reasoning section?

    What they're checking
    The first filter.
    How to answer
Practise the patterns of common types (series, coding-decoding, syllogisms) for 20 minutes a day, timed. When stuck, move on - come back later.
  2. 10.How would you explain your project in 2 minutes on the telephonic round?

    What they're checking
    Speaking clearly without a screen.
    How to answer
The problem, your role, the technology, one challenge and the result - in that order. Slowly and clearly on the phone.
  3. 11.When did you resolve a user's complaint?

    What they're checking
    Customer focus.
    How to answer
What the complaint was, how you understood it, what you did and the user's response.
  4. 12.Why Bank of America?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
The scale of banking technology and the role of the India centres - specific.
