Wells Fargo interview questions and answers

Java

  1. 1.Use Java 8 streams to find the sum of the squares of a list's even numbers.

    What they're checking
    Modern Java.
    How to answer
    list.stream().filter(x -> x % 2 == 0).mapToInt(x -> x * x).sum(). Explain that streams are lazy - they run at the terminal operation (sum).
  2. 2.What is the difference between HashMap and ConcurrentHashMap in Java?

    What they're checking
Multithreading - essential in bank systems.
    How to answer
HashMap isn't thread-safe - data can be corrupted from several threads. ConcurrentHashMap is safe and fast by locking parts (or using CAS); it doesn't allow null keys.
  3. 3.When and how would you create a custom exception - such as for an insufficient balance?

    What they're checking
    Clean error handling.
    How to answer
InsufficientFundsException extends Exception (checked, so the caller handles it) - with the needed information in the message. Don't throw a generic Exception for every error.

SQL and data

  1. 4.SQL: show the running balance after each transaction on an account.

    What they're checking
Window functions - a banking classic.
    How to answer
SUM(amount) OVER (PARTITION BY account_id ORDER BY txn_time ROWS UNBOUNDED PRECEDING). Keep debits negative and credits positive.
  2. 5.SQL: find each customer's third transaction.

    What they're checking
    Ranking.
    How to answer
ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY customer_id ORDER BY txn_time) = 3. Say that customers with fewer than 3 transactions won't appear.
  3. 6.How would you get branch-wise total deposits with a pivot table in Excel?

    What they're checking
An Excel test has been reported for analyst roles.
    How to answer
Select the data -> Insert Pivot Table -> branch in Rows, deposit amount in Values (Sum). Pick the month with a filter.
  4. 7.Write a function that calculates a loan EMI.

    What they're checking
    Banking maths + coding.
    How to answer
    EMI = P x r x (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n - 1), where r = annual rate / 12 / 100 and n = months. If the rate is 0, EMI = P / n - a separate case.

DSA

  1. 8.Find two entries in a list of transactions that add up to a given amount.

    What they're checking
    Hashing.
    How to answer
As you go, check a set for (amount - current). O(n). Take care not to count the same entry twice.
  2. 9.Remove duplicates from a sorted array, keeping the unique elements at the front (in place).

    What they're checking
    Two pointers.
    How to answer
One pointer for writing, one for reading; write when a new value appears. Return the unique count. O(n), O(1) space.

Behavioural

  1. 10.When did you follow the rules when a shortcut would have been easier?

    What they're checking
    Compliance matters in a bank.
    How to answer
The situation, what the shortcut was, why you chose the right way, and the result - a story of integrity.
  2. 11.What do you think about shift timings for working with a US team?

    What they're checking
    A global team.
    How to answer
Honestly, but flexibly - you understand the need for meetings in overlap hours.
  3. 12.Why Wells Fargo?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
The scale of banking technology and the role of the India centres - specific.
