Zomato interview questions and answers

DSA

  1. 1.Find the minimum-length subarray whose sum is at least the target.

    What they're checking
Sliding window - reported in interviews.
    How to answer
Two pointers; move right, and when the sum ≥ target, shrink from the left and update the minimum length. O(n) for positive numbers. Follow-up: with negative numbers, prefix sums + a deque.
  2. 2.Find the kth smallest element in a BST.

    What they're checking
    Tree traversal.
    How to answer
Inorder traversal gives sorted order - stop at the kth element.
  3. 3.Merge k sorted arrays.

    What they're checking
    Heap.
    How to answer
Put the first element of each array in a min-heap; take the smallest and push the next one from the same array. O(N log k).
  4. 4.How would you update a restaurant's average rating in real time?

    What they're checking
    Practical thinking.
    How to answer
Don't recompute the whole average on each rating - keep the total sum and count; new average = sum/count.

Projects and culture fit

  1. 5.Give a deep dive into your project - be ready for every line.

    What they're checking
Deep dives are common in reports.
    How to answer
The architecture, the database choice, your code, and what you would do differently - specifically.
  2. 6.What one thing would you improve in the Zomato app?

    What they're checking
    Product sense and customer thinking.
    How to answer
A real problem you faced, its solution, and how you would measure that it worked.
  3. 7.Give an example of working where things change fast.

    What they're checking
    Startup culture fit.
    How to answer
When the plan changed and how you adjusted - in STAR.
  4. 8.Why Zomato?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
Real-time logistics and a consumer product - whatever you genuinely like.

More questions

  1. 9.Merge two sorted arrays (without extra space, if there is room).

    What they're checking
    Merging has been reported.
    How to answer
Fill from the back - compare the last (largest) elements of both and place the larger at the end of the first array.
  2. 10.How would you build an LRU cache?

    What they're checking
    Reported in interviews.
    How to answer
A hash map + a doubly linked list; move to the front on use, remove from the back when full - both O(1).
  3. 11.Zigzag level order traversal of a binary tree.

    What they're checking
    A BFS variation.
    How to answer
Level order, reversing every other level (or using a deque).
  4. 12.In what order would you show restaurants in search?

    What they're checking
    Product + data thinking.
    How to answer
Distance, rating, delivery time and the user's preferences - a weight for each factor, checked with A/B tests.
  5. 13.Tell me about a project where you changed something based on user feedback.

    What they're checking
    User focus.
    How to answer
What the feedback was, what you changed, and its effect.

7-day preparation plan for the Zomato interview

  1. Day 1: Sliding window - five problems.
  2. Day 2: Trees and BSTs.
  3. Day 3: Heaps and merging.
  4. Day 4: A mixed DSA mock (two questions, 60 minutes).
  5. Day 5: Write out your project deep dive.
  6. Day 6: Product improvement and culture-fit stories.
  7. Day 7: Revision.

Preparation tips

  • Know the sliding window, tree and heap patterns well.
  • Be ready for follow-up questions - such as negative numbers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Panicking on a follow-up - state the approach first.
  • Not remembering the details of your project's code.
  • A generic answer to a product question ('make the UI better').
