About Oracle

Oracle is a global company in databases, business software and cloud (Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - OCI). It has large centres in Bengaluru and Hyderabad; interviews go deep on DBMS and OS.

This guide covers 12 Oracle interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the Oracle interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.

Oracle hiring process

  1. Step 1: Online assessment

Aptitude, CS fundamentals (DBMS, OS) and coding.

  2. Step 2: Technical rounds

Usually two - DSA (running the code or a dry run), DBMS/OS, SQL and your project.

  3. Step 3: HR

    Why Oracle, team fit, expectations.

Oracle does not publish its interview process for India freshers in detail (as of our check). This information is based on candidate reports and varies by role, level and team.

Oracle interview questions and answers

DBMS and OS

  1. 1.Explain the ACID properties.

    What they're checking
    Understanding of database transactions.
    How to answer
Atomicity (all or nothing), Consistency (rules aren't broken), Isolation (transactions don't interfere), Durability (once committed, it stays). Use a bank transfer as the example.
  2. 2.How does a B-tree index work?

    What they're checking
    Database internals.
    How to answer
A sorted, balanced tree - the range narrows at each level, so search is O(log n).
  3. 3.When would you use a join and when a subquery?

    What they're checking
    Understanding of SQL.
    How to answer
A join when you need data from two tables together; a subquery to filter on a value or list. Performance depends on the plan.
  4. 4.What is the difference between paging and segmentation?

    What they're checking
    OS memory management.
    How to answer
Paging = fixed-size blocks; segmentation = logical parts (code, data, stack) of different sizes.

Coding and HR

  1. 5.Reverse the words of a sentence: 'I love India' -> 'India love I'.

    What they're checking
    String handling.
    How to answer
Split and join in reverse, or reverse the whole string and then each word (in place).
  2. 6.Why Oracle?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
Your interest in databases or cloud - specific and true.

More DBMS and OS questions

  1. 7.How does a deadlock happen in a database, and how is it handled?

    What they're checking
    Depth in transactions.
    How to answer
Two transactions wait for each other's locks. The database breaks it by rolling one back; taking locks in a fixed order prevents it.
  2. 8.What is the difference between 3NF and BCNF?

    What they're checking
    Depth in normalization.
    How to answer
BCNF is stricter - the left side of every dependency must be a super key; 3NF allows some exceptions.
  3. 9.What is a correlated subquery?

    What they're checking
    Depth in SQL.
    How to answer
A subquery that runs for each row of the outer query - such as employees earning more than their department's average.
  4. 10.What is thrashing?

    What they're checking
    OS memory.
    How to answer
When the system spends more time swapping pages than doing real work - too little memory, too many processes.
  5. 11.What is OCI?

    What they're checking
    Company awareness.
    How to answer
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Oracle's cloud platform (servers, storage, databases).

One more question

  1. 12.How would you speed up a slow SQL query?

    What they're checking
    Practical DBMS.
    How to answer
Look at the execution plan, add the right index, drop SELECT *, and rewrite the query if needed.

7-day preparation plan for the Oracle interview

  1. Day 1: DBMS - ACID, transactions, isolation levels.
  2. Day 2: Indexing and query optimisation.
  3. Day 3: SQL - joins, subqueries, correlated subqueries.
  4. Day 4: OS - memory, paging, thrashing.
  5. Day 5: DSA - arrays, strings, trees.
  6. Day 6: Your project (especially a database one) and HR.
  7. Day 7: A mock round.

Preparation tips

  • Study DBMS and OS in depth - questions here go beyond the basics.
  • A DBMS project is a bonus - be ready to discuss its design.
  • Practise both running your DSA code and dry runs.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Studying DBMS only up to definitions.
  • Not practising writing SQL queries.
  • Trying to run the code straight away when asked for a dry run.
