PayPal interview questions and answers

DSA

  1. 1.Merge two sorted linked lists.

    What they're checking
    Pointers and merging.
    How to answer
Start from a dummy node and keep attaching the smaller element of the two. O(n+m).
  2. 2.Find the maximum subarray sum (Kadane).

    What they're checking
    A classic DP/greedy problem.
    How to answer
Current sum = max(element, current + element); update the best at each step. If all are negative, the largest element.
  3. 3.Find two numbers in an array with a difference of k.

    What they're checking
    Hashing.
    How to answer
    For each x, look for x+k or x-k in a set. O(n).

Payments and CS fundamentals

  1. 4.Why is idempotency important in payments?

    What they're checking
Preventing double charges - the core of payments.
    How to answer
If the same request arrives twice (a network retry), charge only once. Send a unique idempotency key with each request, and have the server check it first.
  2. 5.How does HTTPS keep data safe?

    What they're checking
    Security basics.
    How to answer
In the TLS handshake the server's certificate is verified and a shared key is created; after that the data travels encrypted.
  3. 6.What is cache memory? Why is it faster than RAM?

    What they're checking
Hardware basics - reported in interviews.
    How to answer
A small, very fast memory near the CPU that holds data needed again and again. Faster because of its technology (SRAM) and its closeness to the CPU.
  4. 7.What would you do if a transaction failed midway?

    What they're checking
    Thinking about reliability.
    How to answer
Keep the transaction atomic - it either completes or rolls back; track its status and retry safely.

HR

  1. 8.Why PayPal?

    What they're checking
Motivation - reported to be always asked.
    How to answer
Global payments, security and scale - whatever you genuinely like, specifically.
  2. 9.What was the hardest part of a project on your resume?

    What they're checking
    Depth.
    How to answer
The problem, the approaches you tried, and the final solution.

More questions

  1. 10.How would you catch suspicious transactions (high level)?

    What they're checking
    The payments domain.
    How to answer
Rules (odd amounts, a new device, a different country) + a model trained on past data; when in doubt, extra verification.
  2. 11.Explain insert and delete in a binary search tree.

    What they're checking
    Trees.
    How to answer
Insert - smaller goes left, larger goes right. Delete - remove a leaf; with one child, connect it; with two children, replace with the inorder successor.
  3. 12.Why is rate limiting important for payment APIs?

    What they're checking
    Security and stability.
    How to answer
So one user or bot can't bring the system down with too many requests, and brute-force attacks are stopped.
  4. 13.Tell me about a time you helped a team without being asked.

    What they're checking
    Collaboration.
    How to answer
The situation, what you did, and the effect on the team - in STAR.
