Zoho interview questions - a complete guide
Zoho's programming rounds are well known - often you have to build a small application. Here is how to prepare for the written test, the programming rounds and the interview.
About Zoho
Zoho is an Indian SaaS company from Chennai that builds business software such as CRM, Mail and Books. Its programming rounds are reported to be hard and selective; it also runs programmes like Zoho Schools of Learning.

Zoho interview questions and answers
Programming
1.Advanced round: build a railway reservation system.
- What they're checking
- A complete small application - design and working code.
- How to answer
- List the features first (book, cancel, available seats, waiting list). Build the classes/structs, then a menu-driven program. Core first, extras after.
2.What is the output of this C code? (pointers, ++, arrays)
- What they're checking
- Output prediction comes up in the written test.
- How to answer
- Track it line by line; mind the difference between i++ and ++i, and pointer arithmetic.
3.Print a matrix in spiral order.
- What they're checking
- 2D array boundaries.
- How to answer
- Keep four boundaries (top, bottom, left, right) and bring them inwards after each loop.
4.Compress a string: 'aaabb' -> 'a3b2'.
- What they're checking
- String handling.
- How to answer
- Count runs of the same character in one pass; write out on each change. Edge cases: one character, an empty string.
Technical and HR
5.What does indexing do in a database?
- What they're checking
- DBMS.
- How to answer
- Like a book's index - finding rows quickly without reading the whole table; but inserts/updates get slightly slower.
6.Why Zoho?
- What they're checking
- Motivation.
- How to answer
- An Indian product company that builds its own products - say truthfully what appeals to you.
More programming questions
7.Print a star pyramid pattern.
- What they're checking
- Control of loops - common in written/programming rounds.
- How to answer
- In each row i, (n-i) spaces and (2i-1) stars. Nested loops.
8.How many pairs in an array add up to k?
- What they're checking
- Hashing.
- How to answer
- For each element x, add the count of (k-x) from the map, then put x in the map.
9.Capitalise the first letter of every word in a sentence.
- What they're checking
- String handling.
- How to answer
- Uppercase the character after a space (and the first one) - edge case: several spaces.
10.Multiply two matrices.
- What they're checking
- 2D arrays.
- How to answer
- Check A's columns = B's rows; C[i][j] = the sum of A[i][k] × B[k][j].
11.When does a transaction roll back?
- What they're checking
- DBMS.
- How to answer
- When an error happens midway - all the earlier changes are undone so the data isn't left half-done.
One more question
12.How would you save your application to files without a database?
- What they're checking
- Persistence can come up in a programming round.
- How to answer
- Save in a simple format (CSV/JSON) and load at start; when writing, write a temp file first, then rename - so the data isn't corrupted.
7-day preparation plan for the Zoho interview
- Day 1: C output prediction - 20 questions.
- Day 2: Pattern and matrix programs.
- Day 3: Strings - compression, manipulation.
- Day 4: One menu-driven application (reservation) in 2 hours.
- Day 5: A second application (library/banking).
- Day 6: DBMS and your project.
- Day 7: A mock written test and HR.
Preparation tips
- Practise building small menu-driven applications (library, reservation, banking).
- Do C output-prediction questions (pointers, operators) every day.
- The programming rounds are reported to be hard and selective - practise consistently.
Mistakes to avoid
- Starting to code in the application round without a design.
- Carelessness with C's tricky operators (++, pointers).
- Preparing for only one round - there are several programming rounds here.
