Target interview questions and answers

Coding and machine coding

  1. 1.Machine coding: fix a bug in the given code, add a feature and write tests - how do you start?

    What they're checking
Such a round has been reported.
    How to answer
First run the code and read the tests to understand it. Write a failing test for the bug, then fix it. Add the feature in small steps, with tests for each step. Watch the time.
  2. 2.How many pairs of products can you buy within a budget?

    What they're checking
    Two pointers.
    How to answer
Sort the prices; a left and a right pointer. If left + right <= budget, add (right - left) pairs and move left; otherwise move right. O(n log n).
  3. 3.You need product details instantly from an SKU code - which data structure?

    What they're checking
    Lookup design.
    How to answer
A hash map (SKU -> product), O(1). For prefix search, a trie or a sorted list + binary search.
  4. 4.How would you raise a reorder alert before an item runs out in each store?

    What they're checking
    Retail logic.
    How to answer
Each item's average daily sales and the supplier's lead time. Reorder point = average sales x lead time + safety stock. Alert when stock falls below it.

Design

  1. 5.LLD of a shopping cart - with promotions (buy 2 get 1 free, 10% off).

    What they're checking
    LLD.
    How to answer
Cart, CartItem, Product, and a Promotion interface (apply(cart)). Each promotion a separate class; a rule for which promotions can combine. Apply them all when calculating the total.
  2. 6.Traffic grows 10 times on a sale day (like Black Friday) - what do you do in advance?

    What they're checking
    Thinking about scale.
    How to answer
Load testing, autoscaling, product pages on a cache/CDN, checkout through a queue, priority for essential services, and feature flags to switch off heavy features.
  3. 7.How would you find the nearest store with an item in stock?

    What they're checking
    Location + inventory.
    How to answer
Nearby stores from a location index (geohash), check their stock, sort by distance. Stock data may be slightly stale - show 'limited stock'.
  4. 8.How do you stop the whole website going down when one service is slow?

    What they're checking
    Resilience.
    How to answer
Timeouts, a circuit breaker (stop calling for a while after repeated failures), a fallback (such as hiding recommendations), and bulkheads to separate resources.
  5. 9.SQL: the 5 best-selling products of the last 7 days.

    What they're checking
    Analytics SQL.
    How to answer
    WHERE order_date >= CURRENT_DATE - 7, GROUP BY product_id, SUM(quantity) DESC, LIMIT 5. Exclude cancelled orders.

HM and HR

  1. 10.When did you help build an inclusive atmosphere in a team?

    What they're checking
    Team culture.
    How to answer
Giving a quiet member a chance, making room for a different opinion - a specific example.
  2. 11.What is the basic idea of demand forecasting in retail?

    What they're checking
    Domain curiosity.
    How to answer
Estimating future sales from past sales, seasons, festivals, promotions and trends - so stock is neither short nor excess.
  3. 12.Why Target - what does Target in India do?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
Target's technology is built from Bengaluru - the scale of retail and your interest, specifically.
