Nutanix - interview guide

Nutanix interview questions - a complete guide

Nutanix is a systems and storage company - so you need an understanding of OS, concurrency and distributed systems alongside DSA.

Language:EnglishHinglish

About Nutanix

Nutanix builds hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) - running servers, storage and networking together through software, both in your own data centre and in the public cloud. A lot of its engineering happens in Bengaluru and Pune, often in C++, Go and Python.

This guide covers 12 Nutanix interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the Nutanix interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.

Nutanix hiring process

  1. Recruiter screen

    Background and role.

  2. Technical screen

Coding and fundamentals. Older reports also mention a HackerRank test.

  3. Final loop

Reported: 2 technical rounds and the hiring manager. Some include design and puzzles.

Nutanix does not publish its India fresher interview process in detail (as of our check). This is based on candidate reports - many of them for experienced roles, so the fresher process can differ. Confirm with the recruiter.

Nutanix interview questions and answers

Systems and storage

  1. 1.What is hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI)?

    What they're checking
    Nutanix's product.
    How to answer
Instead of a separate storage box, every server has compute and storage, and software joins them into one big pool. To scale, just add another node.
  2. 2.What is the difference between a type 1 and a type 2 hypervisor?

    What they're checking
    Depth in virtualization.
    How to answer
Type 1 runs directly on hardware (like AHV, ESXi) - fast, for data centres. Type 2 runs on top of an OS (like VirtualBox) - for testing on a laptop.
  3. 3.What is the trade-off between replication factor 2 and 3 in storage?

    What they're checking
    Reliability vs cost.
    How to answer
RF2 - survives losing one copy, less disk. RF3 - survives two failures, but 50% more disk and more write work.
  4. 4.How do you take a disk snapshot without making a full copy?

    What they're checking
    Copy-on-write.
    How to answer
At snapshot time, only freeze the metadata. Later, when a block changes, write a new block and point the live disk at it; the snapshot keeps seeing the old block.
  5. 5.If free disk blocks are tracked in a bitmap, how do you find the first free block fast?

    What they're checking
    Low-level data structures.
    How to answer
One bit per block. Look at 64-bit words - in a word that isn't all 1s, find the first 0 bit (count-trailing-ones). A summary bitmap on top makes it even faster.

Concurrency and coding

  1. 6.Write a producer-consumer with a bounded buffer.

    What they're checking
    Threads and synchronisation.
    How to answer
A mutex + two condition variables (not_full, not_empty). The producer waits when full and signals not_empty after adding; the consumer waits when empty. Keep the wait in a while loop (spurious wakeups).
  2. 7.How would you build a distributed lock across many machines?

    What they're checking
    Distributed systems.
    How to answer
A consensus store such as ZooKeeper/etcd, a lease (time limit) with the lock so it is released on a crash, and a fencing token so an old owner can't write by mistake.
  3. 8.How would you find a memory leak in a C/C++ program?

    What they're checking
    Systems debugging.
    How to answer
Run Valgrind or AddressSanitizer, watch heap growth, and in C++ use smart pointers (RAII) instead of raw new/delete.
  4. 9.Count errors per minute in a log file and report the spike minutes.

    What they're checking
    Practical coding.
    How to answer
Cut each line's timestamp to the minute, count ERRORs in a map, then report minutes far above average (such as 3 times).
  5. 10.Puzzle: how do you measure exactly 4 litres with a 3-litre and a 5-litre jug?

    What they're checking
    Puzzles have been reported.
    How to answer
Fill the 5, pour into the 3 (2 left in the 5), empty the 3, pour the 2 into the 3, fill the 5 again, pour into the 3 until full (1 goes in) - 4 is left in the 5.

Hiring manager

  1. 11.When did you take full ownership of a problem that wasn't your responsibility?

    What they're checking
    Customer-first ownership.
    How to answer
What the problem was, why you stepped in, what you did and the result.
  2. 12.Why Nutanix?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
Your interest in systems, storage or cloud infrastructure - an OS project, a distributed systems course or something you built.

7-day preparation plan for the Nutanix interview

  1. Day 1: OS - processes, threads, sync primitives.
  2. Day 2: Concurrency coding - producer-consumer, reader-writer.
  3. Day 3: Virtualization, HCI and storage basics.
  4. Day 4: Distributed systems - locks, replication, the idea of consensus.
  5. Day 5: DSA - bits, hashing, heaps.
  6. Day 6: C/C++ memory + puzzles.
  7. Day 7: A mock loop + hiring manager stories.

Preparation tips

  • OS and concurrency (mutexes, condition variables) in depth.
  • Understand the basic concepts of virtualization and storage.
  • Be ready for memory and pointer questions in C/C++.
  • Solve puzzles while explaining your logic.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Doing only LeetCode and skipping OS/concurrency.
  • Waiting on a condition variable with 'if' instead of 'while'.
  • Not knowing cloud/virtualization basics for a systems role.
