Expedia Group interview questions and answers

Travel-style DSA problems

  1. 1.From a list of flights, the cheapest route from A to B with at most K stops.

    What they're checking
    Shortest path with a constraint.
    How to answer
Run Bellman-Ford K+1 times (from the previous copy each time), or BFS by levels. Plain Dijkstra can be wrong here because of the stop limit.
  2. 2.Build the full itinerary from tickets (from, to), using each ticket once.

    What they're checking
    An Euler path.
    How to answer
Build the graph (destinations sorted), run DFS and add a node to the result when it has no route left; reverse at the end (Hierholzer).
  3. 3.Given rates (USD->EUR, EUR->INR), how much INR is one USD?

    What they're checking
    Weighted graph traversal.
    How to answer
Two edges per rate (a->b rate, b->a 1/rate). Multiply rates along a DFS/BFS from the source. -1 if there is no path.
  4. 4.Given a hotel room's existing bookings, is a new date range available?

    What they're checking
    Interval overlap.
    How to answer
Two intervals overlap if new.start < old.end and old.start < new.end. If bookings are sorted, check the neighbours with binary search.
  5. 5.Show the last 10 distinct searched destinations, newest first.

    What they're checking
    Choosing a data structure.
    How to answer
A linked list + hash map: on a search, remove it if it already exists and add it at the front; if there are more than 10, remove from the back. Each operation O(1).
  6. 6.MCQ type: what is the complexity of building a heap from n elements?

    What they're checking
MCQs have been reported in the OA.
    How to answer
O(n) with bottom-up heapify - O(n log n) if you insert one by one. The reason: most nodes are near the bottom and move down very little.

Design

  1. 7.Two people book the last room at the same time - how do you prevent overbooking?

    What they're checking
    Concurrency.
    How to answer
Lock the room row in a database transaction for check-and-update, or an optimistic update with a version number - whoever's update fails is told 'no rooms left'.
  2. 8.High-level design of hotel search where prices change constantly.

    What they're checking
    HLD.
    How to answer
Static hotel information in a search index, prices from partners cached with a short TTL, and the final price re-checked at booking. Filters and sorting in the index.
  3. 9.How would you handle different time zones in a booking system?

    What they're checking
    A real travel problem.
    How to answer
Store times in UTC, keep the hotel's/airport's time zone separately, and convert to local when displaying. Keep dates such as check-in as 'local dates'.

Hiring manager

  1. 10.When did you change a feature by thinking from the user's point of view?

    What they're checking
    Customer focus.
    How to answer
How you saw the user's problem, what you changed, and the difference - specific.
  2. 11.A deadline was about to be missed - what trade-off did you make?

    What they're checking
    Practical judgement.
    How to answer
What you dropped/postponed, whom you talked to, and how you protected quality.
  3. 12.Why Expedia?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
Your experience with a travel product or a problem you would like to solve - specific.

7-day preparation plan for the Expedia Group interview

  1. Day 1: Graphs - BFS, Dijkstra, Bellman-Ford with K stops.
  2. Day 2: Intervals and binary search.
  3. Day 3: Hashing and linked-list-based structures.
  4. Day 4: CS MCQs - complexity, OS, DBMS.
  5. Day 5: Design - booking, overbooking, search with caching.
  6. Day 6: Hiring manager stories.
  7. Day 7: A timed HackerRank mock.

Preparation tips

  • Nail graphs (shortest path with stops, Euler paths) and intervals.
  • The OA has MCQs too - look over complexity and CS basics.
  • Talk about concurrency (overbooking) and caching in design.
  • The process can be long - follow up politely.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Applying plain Dijkstra to the K-stops problem.
  • Getting the interval overlap condition wrong.
  • Not mentioning concurrency at all in design.
