This guide covers 13 Workday interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the Workday interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.

Workday hiring process

  1. Online test (HackerRank)

Reported: 2 DSA questions, 1 SQL, and MCQs on AI, cloud, OS and networking.

  2. Technical interview

Projects, DSA and some system design.

  3. Managerial round

Behavioural, team fit and questions about Workday's culture.

Workday does not publish its India fresher interview process in detail (as of our check). This is based on candidate reports - many of them for experienced roles, so the fresher process can differ. Confirm with the recruiter.

Workday interview questions and answers

Coding and SQL

  1. 1.SQL: the average salary per department, only for departments with more than 5 people.

    What they're checking
    GROUP BY + HAVING.
    How to answer
SELECT dept_id, AVG(salary) FROM employees GROUP BY dept_id HAVING COUNT(*) > 5. Explain that WHERE applies before grouping and HAVING after.
  2. 2.Find all of a manager's reportees (direct and below) in an org chart.

    What they're checking
    Tree/graph traversal.
    How to answer
Build a map from manager to children and run BFS/DFS. Mention in one line that a recursive CTE can do it in SQL.
  3. 3.Find the lowest common manager of two employees.

    What they're checking
LCA - in an n-ary tree.
    How to answer
Put all managers from one employee up to the CEO in a set; walk up from the other - the first one found in the set is the answer. Or a recursive LCA.
  4. 4.Calculate the leave balance: 1.5 days a month, at most 10 days carried forward at year-end.

    What they're checking
    Turning business rules into code.
    How to answer
A month-by-month loop: balance += 1.5, subtract leave taken (don't let it go negative). At the year change, balance = min(balance, 10). Test a mid-year joiner and exactly 10.
  5. 5.The K most frequent words in a document.

    What they're checking
    Hashing + a heap.
    How to answer
Count in a map, then a min-heap of size K (by count, alphabetical on ties). O(n log K).

Concepts and design

  1. 6.How would you keep thousands of companies' (tenants') data separate in one system?

    What they're checking
    Multi-tenant SaaS - Workday's core.
    How to answer
A tenant_id in every table and a filter on every query (row-level security), or a separate schema per tenant. Separate encryption keys, and tests showing one tenant can't see another's data.
  2. 7.How would you make re-running a payroll run safe if it fails midway?

    What they're checking
A double payment in money = a big mistake.
    How to answer
Record each employee's payment with a unique key; on a re-run, skip what is already done (idempotent). Keep a checkpoint of how far it got.
  3. 8.Two payroll jobs grabbed each other's locks and got stuck - what happened, and how would you avoid it?

    What they're checking
    Deadlock in a real scenario.
    How to answer
Each is waiting for the other's resource. Always take locks in the same order (such as employee table first, then payment), set lock timeouts, and keep transactions short.
  4. 9.MCQ level: what is the difference between supervised and unsupervised learning?

    What they're checking
AI MCQs have been reported in the OA.
    How to answer
Supervised learning has the right answer (label) with the data - like spam/not spam. Unsupervised has no labels - the model finds groups itself (clustering).
  5. 10.Design a portal where employees download payslips.

    What they're checking
    Basic system design.
    How to answer
Generate payslip PDFs into object storage, with metadata (employee, month, path) in a database. Short-lived signed URLs for download, a login check, and pre-generating them for month-end load.

Managerial

  1. 11.When did you change your design after user feedback?

    What they're checking
    A customer service mindset.
    How to answer
What the feedback was, what you changed and what came of it - with a number if you can.
  2. 12.Workday counts 'employees' as a core value - what does a good team mean to you?

    What they're checking
    Culture fit.
    How to answer
Use a specific example of how you helped someone in the team or got help, and how trust was built.
  3. 13.Why Workday, and why an interest in HR/finance software?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
This software touches millions of people's salaries and careers - why the accuracy and scale problems in it appeal to you, specifically.

7-day preparation plan for the Workday interview

  1. Day 1: Trees - traversal, LCA (n-ary too).
  2. Day 2: Hashing and heaps - top K problems.
  3. Day 3: SQL - GROUP BY, HAVING, joins, the idea of a recursive CTE.
  4. Day 4: OS, networking, cloud and AI MCQs.
  5. Day 5: SaaS design - multi-tenancy, idempotency, a payslip portal.
  6. Day 6: Projects and managerial stories.
  7. Day 7: A timed HackerRank mock.

Preparation tips

  • A separate SQL question has been reported - nail GROUP BY, HAVING and joins.
  • Look over the basic OS, networking, cloud and AI MCQs once.
  • Practise trees (org charts) and heaps.
  • Understand SaaS concepts such as multi-tenancy and idempotency.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the MCQ section and studying only coding.
  • Not testing edge cases of business rules (leave, payroll).
  • Forgetting data security (tenant isolation) in design.
