ServiceNow interview questions - a complete guide
ServiceNow's online assessment is reported to include more than coding - SQL, MCQs and a prompt-writing task too. Here is how to prepare for every part.
About ServiceNow
ServiceNow is a cloud platform on which companies run their IT support, HR requests and other workflows - for example, raising a ticket when an office laptop breaks, routing it to the right team and closing it on time. It has large engineering centres in Hyderabad and Bengaluru, with a lot of Java/JavaScript work.
This guide covers 12 ServiceNow interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the ServiceNow interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.

ServiceNow interview questions and answers
Online assessment
1.SQL: find the oldest open incident in each assignment group.
- What they're checking
- Window functions - on ticketing data.
- How to answer
- With WHERE state = 'open', use ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY group_id ORDER BY opened_at) and keep only row number 1. GROUP BY + MIN gives only the time, not the whole row.
2.Prompt-writing task: how would you get an AI to write a 3-line summary of a support ticket?
- What they're checking
- A new part of the OA in reports.
- How to answer
- Give the AI a role (support analyst), the ticket text, a fixed output format (3 bullets: problem, what was tried, next step), and limits (don't include personal data). Test it on a hard ticket and refine the prompt.
3.The longest substring with at most K distinct characters.
- What they're checking
- Sliding window.
- How to answer
- Move right and count characters in a map. When there are more than K distinct characters, move left until there are K again. Update the length at each step. O(n).
4.Given workflow steps and their dependencies, find the right order to run them.
- What they're checking
- Topological sort - workflows are ServiceNow's core.
- How to answer
- Count each step's incoming dependencies; queue the ones with 0 (Kahn's algorithm). If not every step comes out, there is a cycle - say the workflow is invalid.
Java, OOP and DBMS
5.What changed in HashMap collisions after Java 8?
- What they're checking
- A deep understanding of Java.
- How to answer
- When one bucket has many entries (more than 8, with a large enough table), the linked list becomes a balanced tree - worst case goes from O(n) to O(log n). The table doubles at a 0.75 load factor.
6.What difference is left between an interface and an abstract class after Java 8?
- What they're checking
- An updated understanding of OOP.
- How to answer
- Interfaces can now have default and static methods, but no instance state (fields). Abstract classes have state and constructors; a class can extend only one abstract class but implement many interfaces.
7.Design the tables for an IT ticket system - incident, user, assignment group.
- What they're checking
- Schema design.
- How to answer
- incident (id, short_description, priority, state, caller_id FK user, group_id FK group, assigned_to FK user, opened_at, resolved_at), user, group and group_member. Indexes on priority and state; timestamps for SLAs.
8.What is the difference between PUT and PATCH in a REST API?
- What they're checking
- API basics.
- How to answer
- PUT replaces the whole resource (fields you don't send can be removed); PATCH changes only the fields you send. PUT is idempotent.
9.When does adding an index hurt?
- What they're checking
- DBMS trade-offs.
- How to answer
- The index is updated on every insert/update - write-heavy tables slow down. An index on a column with few distinct values (like gender) doesn't help. And it takes disk space.
Hiring manager
10.The requirement changed in the middle of a project - what did you do?
- What they're checking
- Flexibility and communication.
- How to answer
- What changed, how you understood the impact (time, work), what you agreed with your team/mentor, and the result.
11.You're on call and a bug hits production - what do you do in the first 15 minutes?
- What they're checking
- Calm problem solving.
- How to answer
- Understand the impact (how many users), check logs and recent deployments, roll back to the previous version if needed, update the team - root cause later.
12.In your own words, what problem does the ServiceNow platform solve?
- What they're checking
- Understanding the company.
- How to answer
- Requests inside companies (IT, HR, approvals) get lost in email and Excel; ServiceNow turns them into tickets and automatic workflows in one place, with SLAs.
7-day preparation plan for the ServiceNow interview
- Day 1: Sliding window and hashing - five problems.
- Day 2: Graphs - topological sort, cycle detection.
- Day 3: SQL - window functions, joins, GROUP BY.
- Day 4: Java collections and OOP (Java 8+).
- Day 5: DBMS - indexing, normalization, schema design.
- Day 6: Prompt-writing practice and understanding the ServiceNow product.
- Day 7: A timed mock OA + hiring manager stories.
Preparation tips
- Don't take SQL lightly - a separate section is reported in the OA.
- Understand Java collections (HashMap, ArrayList, HashSet) from the inside.
- For prompt writing, remember the role, context, format and limits structure.
- Look at the ServiceNow product once - understand words like ticket, workflow and SLA.
Mistakes to avoid
- Studying only DSA and skipping the OA's SQL/MCQ parts.
- Finishing the prompt-writing task with a one-line prompt.
- Getting stuck on Java basics (HashMap, interfaces).
