Rippling interview questions and answers

Implementation coding

The idea of the problem may be easy - the real test is clean, working code.

  1. 1.Build an in-memory key-value store with transactions - begin, set, get, commit, rollback.

    What they're checking
    Implementation-heavy design.
    How to answer
Keep a stack of transactions - each level a map of that transaction's changes. get looks from the top down. rollback pops the top; commit merges the top into the one below. Test nested transactions.
  2. 2.Find the reporting chain from an employee to the CEO, and catch an accidental loop.

    What they're checking
    Graph + validation.
    How to answer
Walk up the manager map and keep the employees seen in a set. If anyone comes up again, it is a cycle - return an error.
  3. 3.There are many jobs and H hours - what is the minimum capacity per hour to finish them all?

    What they're checking
    Binary search on the answer.
    How to answer
Binary search capacity from 1 to the largest job; for each capacity count the hours (job / capacity, rounded up). The smallest capacity with hours <= H.
  4. 4.A user's access should start from a future date (like admin from the 1st) - data and code?

    What they're checking
Time-based data - common in HR systems.
    How to answer
effective_from and effective_to on each permission. Access on a date = the rows whose range covers that date. Don't allow overlaps.
  5. 5.A data model for a country-wise holiday calendar.

    What they're checking
    Practical modelling.
    How to answer
A Country table, Holiday (country_id, date, name, optional state/region), and the employee's work location. When calculating leave, use the holidays of the employee's location.
  6. 6.Find the overlapping parts of two sorted lists of shifts (time ranges).

    What they're checking
Intervals - the implementation must be clean.
    How to answer
Pointers on both. Overlap = (max(start), min(end)) if start < end. Move the pointer of whichever ends first. O(m + n).

Design

  1. 7.When an employee changes department, payroll, IT access and benefits should all update - explain the design.

    What they're checking
    Rippling's core idea.
    How to answer
Employee data in one place; a change publishes an event (employee.updated). Payroll, IT and benefits services subscribe and do their work. Retries on failure and an audit log.
  2. 8.Low-level design of a multi-level expense approval.

    What they're checking
    LLD.
    How to answer
Classes: Expense, ApprovalPolicy (how many levels by amount), ApprovalStep (approver, status), and a Notifier. When one step is approved the next starts; on rejection it stops.
  3. 9.High-level design of a notification service that sends email, SMS and Slack.

    What they're checking
    HLD.
    How to answer
An API that puts notifications in a queue, a worker per channel, user preference checks, retries and templates. Rate limiting and protection against duplicates.

Hiring manager

  1. 10.How do you keep code bug-free when writing under time pressure?

    What they're checking
    Exactly what Rippling's rounds check.
    How to answer
Small functions, running 2-3 cases in your head as you write, thinking of edge cases (empty, one element, duplicates) first, and one full dry run at the end.
  2. 11.You see a big mistake in a teammate's PR and the deadline is tomorrow - what do you do?

    What they're checking
    Engineering maturity and team sense.
    How to answer
Point out the mistake clearly, with proof (a failing case), in a respectful tone, suggest a short path to the fix, and help fix it if needed - staying quiet or embarrassing them publicly are both wrong.
  3. 12.Why Rippling?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
Why the idea of bringing HR/IT/finance into one place interests you - and your appetite for working in a fast-moving team.

7-day preparation plan for the Rippling interview

  1. Day 1: Implementation problems - a KV store, transactions.
  2. Day 2: Graphs and cycle detection.
  3. Day 3: Binary search on the answer.
  4. Day 4: LLD - expense approval, holiday calendar.
  5. Day 5: HLD - events, notifications.
  6. Day 6: Mock: two implementation problems, timed.
  7. Day 7: Hiring manager stories + revision.

Preparation tips

  • Implementation practice: fully working code in 45 minutes.
  • Make classes and their relationships clear in LLD.
  • Think about edge cases first - there are reports of rejections over bugs.
  • Nail graphs and binary search on the answer.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Understanding the idea but leaving the code half done.
  • Not testing edge cases.
  • Forgetting data consistency/audit in design.
