Project manager interview questions

Project manager interview questions and answers

Project manager interviews check how you plan, how you handle things going wrong and how you keep people aligned. These are the questions asked most, with what each one checks.

What to revise before the interview

  • Project life cycle and planning
  • Scope, schedule and cost (the triple constraint)
  • Risk register and mitigation
  • Agile, Scrum and Waterfall - when to use each
  • Status reporting and RAG status
  • Change control
  • Resource and conflict management
  • Tools: Jira, MS Project, Excel
  1. 1.Your project is two weeks behind. What do you do?

    What they're checking
The most important PM question - handling trouble.
    How to answer
Find the cause, re-plan honestly, look at options (re-prioritise scope, add the right help, run tasks in parallel), and tell stakeholders early with a new plan - never hide a delay.
  2. 2.How do you handle scope creep?

    What they're checking
    Controlling change.
    How to answer
Every new request goes through change control: assess impact on time and cost, get the sponsor's approval, then update the plan. Saying "yes, and here's the impact" works better than a flat no.
  3. 3.How do you manage risks?

    What they're checking
    Planning maturity.
    How to answer
Identify risks early, rate them by probability and impact in a risk register, assign owners and mitigation plans, and review them every week.
  4. 4.Agile or Waterfall - how do you choose?

    What they're checking
    Method judgement.
    How to answer
Waterfall suits fixed, well-understood requirements (some regulatory or infrastructure work); Agile suits changing requirements and frequent delivery. Many teams use a hybrid.
  5. 5.How do you handle a conflict between two team members?

    What they're checking
    People leadership.
    How to answer
Talk to each privately, find the actual issue (workload, approach, communication), bring them together on shared goals, and agree on a way forward. Escalate only if needed.
  6. 6.How do you report project status?

    What they're checking
    Communication.
    How to answer
A short weekly report: overall RAG status, progress against milestones, risks and issues with owners, and decisions needed - written for the audience's level of detail.
  7. 7.A key team member resigns mid-project. What do you do?

    What they're checking
    Resilience planning.
    How to answer
Plan the handover during the notice period, document their knowledge, redistribute work, update the timeline, and start hiring or bring in help early.
  8. 8.How do you estimate a project?

    What they're checking
    Planning skill.
    How to answer
Break work into tasks with the people doing it, use past data or story points, add contingency for risk, and re-estimate as you learn more.
  9. 9.What does a Scrum Master do?

    What they're checking
    Agile knowledge.
    How to answer
Facilitates Scrum events, removes blockers, protects the team from interruptions and coaches the team and organisation in Agile practice. They don't assign tasks or manage people.
  10. 10.Tell me about your most successful project.

    What they're checking
    Evidence of delivery.
    How to answer
Goal, size (team, budget, timeline), a challenge you overcame, and the result in numbers - delivered on time, cost saved, user adoption.

Frequently asked questions

Is PMP certification required for project manager jobs?

Not always, but PMP (or PRINCE2, or CSM for Scrum roles) helps a lot for shortlisting, especially at IT services companies and large enterprises.

How do I move into project management?

Most people move up from a technical or team lead role. Take on coordination work - planning, status reports, risk tracking - and get a certification.

What is the difference between a project manager and a product manager?

A project manager delivers a defined project on time and budget; a product manager decides what to build and why, over the product's life.
