Behavioural interview questions
Behavioural interview questions, answered with STAR
"Tell me about a time..." questions check how you actually behaved, not how you say you would. Answer with STAR: the situation, your task, the action you took, and the result.
1.Tell me about a time you disagreed with a colleague.
- What they're checking
- Whether you handle conflict calmly and focus on the work.
- How to answer
- Show that you listened, used data rather than opinion, and kept the relationship. End with the outcome.
- Example answer
- “A colleague wanted to ship a feature without load testing. I asked for half a day to run a quick test, which showed the database would struggle at peak. We added an index together and shipped two days later without problems.”
2.Describe a time you failed.
- What they're checking
- Ownership and learning.
- How to answer
- Choose a real failure with real stakes. Spend most of the answer on what you changed afterwards.
3.Tell me about a time you worked under pressure.
- What they're checking
- How you prioritise when everything is urgent.
- How to answer
- Explain how you decided what to do first, what you said no to, and how you kept people informed.
4.Give an example of leading without authority.
- What they're checking
- Influence, which matters at every level.
- How to answer
- Describe how you got people to agree - a prototype, data, or doing the first piece yourself.
5.Tell me about a mistake you made and how you fixed it.
- What they're checking
- Honesty, and how quickly you raise problems.
- How to answer
- Say how fast you flagged it, what you fixed, and what you put in place so it couldn't happen again.
6.Describe a time you had to learn something quickly.
- What they're checking
- How you learn - important in fast-changing roles.
- How to answer
- Name the skill, how you learned it (docs, a mentor, a small project) and what you delivered with it.
7.Tell me about a difficult customer or stakeholder.
- What they're checking
- Patience and judgement.
- How to answer
- Show that you understood what they really needed, set expectations clearly, and found a workable outcome.
8.What is the achievement you're most proud of?
- What they're checking
- What you value, and the scale of your impact.
- How to answer
- Pick something with a measurable result, and make your own contribution clear - say "I", not only "we".
