Interview questions for freshers

Interview questions for freshers and campus placements

As a fresher, you'll be asked about your project, your core subjects and yourself. Interviewers know you have little work experience - they want clear basics and real interest.

  1. 1.Explain your final-year project.

    What they're checking
Whether you did the work and understand it.
    How to answer
In two minutes: the problem, your part, the technology and why you chose it, and the result. Expect follow-up questions on any detail you mention.
  2. 2.What is normalisation in DBMS?

    What they're checking
    Core database basics.
    How to answer
Organising tables to reduce duplicate data and update problems. Explain 1NF, 2NF and 3NF with a small example, and mention that denormalising is sometimes done for speed.
  3. 3.What is the difference between a process and a thread?

    What they're checking
    Operating-system basics.
    How to answer
A process has its own memory space; threads share their process's memory. Threads are lighter to create but need synchronisation.
  4. 4.What is a deadlock, and how can it be prevented?

    What they're checking
    Concurrency basics.
    How to answer
Processes waiting on each other forever. Name the four conditions (mutual exclusion, hold and wait, no preemption, circular wait); prevention breaks one of them, such as acquiring locks in a fixed order.
  5. 5.Explain the four pillars of OOP.

    What they're checking
    Programming fundamentals.
    How to answer
Encapsulation, abstraction, inheritance and polymorphism - one sentence and one example each.
  6. 6.What happens when you type a URL into a browser?

    What they're checking
How much of the stack you understand.
    How to answer
DNS lookup, TCP connection and TLS handshake, the HTTP request, the server response, then the browser parsing and rendering the page.
  7. 7.What is the difference between TCP and UDP?

    What they're checking
    Networking basics.
    How to answer
TCP is connection-based, reliable and ordered; UDP is connectionless and faster with no delivery guarantee - used for video calls and games.
  8. 8.Why should we hire a fresher like you?

    What they're checking
    Confidence and willingness to learn.
    How to answer
Point to evidence you learn fast - projects, internships, competitions - and your interest in this company.
  9. 9.Are you willing to relocate or work in shifts?

    What they're checking
    Practical fit for the role.
    How to answer
Answer honestly. If you have constraints, say so politely - it is better than a problem after joining.
