Optum interview questions and answers
Technical
1.What is the difference between checked and unchecked exceptions in Java (with examples)?
- What they're checking
- Java basics - Optum does a lot of Java work.
- How to answer
- Checked ones must be handled/declared at compile time (IOException). Unchecked ones come from RuntimeException (NullPointerException) - usually a bug in the code.
2.What is dependency injection in Spring Boot?
- What they're checking
- Backend framework.
- How to answer
- A class doesn't create its own dependencies - Spring passes them in through the constructor. Testing gets easy (you can pass a mock) and the code is loosely coupled.
3.How would you test a service with JUnit and Mockito?
- What they're checking
- Testing.
- How to answer
- Mock the repository with Mockito, set its answer (when...thenReturn), call the service method, and assert + verify that the repository was called correctly.
4.Design Patient, Doctor and Appointment classes.
- What they're checking
- OOP.
- How to answer
- Patient (id, name), Doctor (id, speciality, slots), Appointment (patient, doctor, time, status). Booking in an AppointmentService that checks the slot is free.
5.How do you stop two appointments being booked in the same slot for one doctor?
- What they're checking
- Concurrency in healthcare booking.
- How to answer
- A unique constraint on (doctor_id, slot_time) in the database - the second insert fails. Plus a transaction and a clear message to the user.
6.Merge two sorted lists of patient IDs, removing duplicates.
- What they're checking
- Basic coding.
- How to answer
- Two pointers; take the smaller, and skip it if it equals the result's last element. O(m + n).
SQL and healthcare data
7.SQL: get the details of each patient's most recent visit.
- What they're checking
- Window functions.
- How to answer
- The rows where ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY patient_id ORDER BY visit_date DESC) = 1. Or join to a subquery with MAX(visit_date).
8.How would you catch duplicate insurance claims?
- What they're checking
- A domain problem.
- How to answer
- Group by the same patient, provider, service code and nearby dates, and flag groups with more than one. Check both exact and 'almost the same'.
9.Why is health data privacy extra important, and how do you protect it in code?
- What they're checking
- Healthcare responsibility.
- How to answer
- Leaking someone's illness can harm them. The US has laws such as HIPAA. Collect minimal data, encrypt, control access, and keep personal data out of logs.
10.Write a function that shows only the last 4 digits of a phone number.
- What they're checking
- Data masking.
- How to answer
- Replace the other digits with 'X': XXXXXX1234. Handle null or short numbers safely. Mask on the server, not just on screen.
Behavioural
11.How would you answer an AI or recorded screening interview?
- What they're checking
- AI screening has been reported.
- How to answer
- Look at the camera, keep the light and sound good, each answer 1-2 minutes in STAR, and don't read a script.
12.Tell me about a time you made a mistake - how did you report and fix it?
- What they're checking
- Integrity.
- How to answer
- You didn't hide it - when you raised it, what you fixed, and what you changed so it doesn't happen again.
13.Why Optum/UnitedHealth Group?
- What they're checking
- Motivation.
- How to answer
- The idea of helping people through technology in healthcare - a personal or project-related reason.
