McKinsey & Company interview questions and answers

Case interview

In a case, your structure and way of thinking count for more than the right answer.

  1. 1.An Indian tea brand's profits have fallen for 3 years - why?

    What they're checking
    A classic profitability case.
    How to answer
Profit = revenue - cost. Break revenue into price x volume (in which channel/region did it fall), and cost into fixed and variable. Ask for data for each branch, state a hypothesis, and end with a recommendation.
    Example answer
“I would first check whether the fall comes from revenue or cost. If volume fell, has a competitor launched a cheaper premium tea? If cost rose, is it the price of tea leaves or transport? Could you share the revenue and cost breakdown for the last 3 years?”
  2. 2.Market sizing: how many cricket bats are sold in India in a year?

    What they're checking
    Structured estimation.
    How to answer
People who play (age group, city/village) x how often they buy a new bat x the share who buy - or start from households. State every assumption and keep round numbers. A sanity check at the end.
  3. 3.Case math: revenue is 200 crore and margin goes from 12% to 15% - how much does profit rise?

    What they're checking
    Fast, correct maths.
    How to answer
24 crore before, 30 crore after - 6 crore (25%) more. Keep stating units and say the 'so what'.
  4. 4.Look at a chart/exhibit and give 2 insights.

    What they're checking
    Speed in reading data.
    How to answer
Read the title and axes first, then the biggest trend or outlier, and how it connects to the case question. Don't just read numbers - say what they mean.
  5. 5.What is a hypothesis-driven approach?

    What they're checking
    McKinsey's way of thinking.
    How to answer
Start with a likely answer (hypothesis), ask for the data to test it, and change it if wrong - instead of analysing everything.
  6. 6.What does MECE mean?

    What they're checking
    The language of structure.
    How to answer
Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive - the parts don't overlap and together cover everything. Like revenue = price x volume.
  7. 7.How would you give the CEO a 30-second recommendation at the end of a case?

    What they're checking
    Synthesis.
    How to answer
The answer first (what to do), then 2-3 reasons with data, then risks and next steps. A decision, not a recap.
  8. 8.How would you recover if you went down the wrong path in a case?

    What they're checking
    Composure.
    How to answer
Pick up the interviewer's hint, accept that new data changes the hypothesis, and come back to the structure. Don't show panic.

Personal Experience Interview (PEI)

The PEI asks deep questions about a single story. Reports mention themes such as personal impact, entrepreneurial drive, inclusive leadership and courageous change.

  1. 9.When did you win people over to an idea they were against at first?

    What they're checking
    Personal impact / inclusive leadership.
    How to answer
One story, in detail: who they were, what their concern was, how you listened to them, what changed and the result. What you said yourself - 'I', not 'we'.
  2. 10.Tell me about a hard goal you achieved with few resources.

    What they're checking
    Entrepreneurial drive.
    How to answer
What the goal was, the obstacles, what you did differently, and a measurable result. The interviewer will ask 'and then?' at every step - remember the detail.

Knowledge Analyst and fit

  1. 11.In a research exercise, how would you write a one-page summary of an industry?

    What they're checking
Reported in the Knowledge Analyst process.
    How to answer
Market size and growth, the big players, trends, and 2-3 'so whats' - each point with a source. Bullets, clear headings, one takeaway.
  2. 12.Why McKinsey, and why consulting?

    What they're checking
    Motivation.
    How to answer
Problems across different industries, learning from people, and a McKinsey piece of work or report you have read - specific.

7-day preparation plan for the McKinsey & Company interview

  1. Day 1: Case frameworks - profitability, market entry, growth.
  2. Day 2: Market sizing - five questions out loud.
  3. Day 3: Case maths and reading charts.
  4. Day 4: Two full cases with a partner.
  5. Day 5: PEI stories - write them out and think of follow-ups.
  6. Day 6: Synthesis practice + read about Solve.
  7. Day 7: A mock interview - case + PEI.

Preparation tips

  • Practise cases out loud with a partner - reading alone isn't enough.
  • Mental maths for 10 minutes daily - percentages, crore/lakh, growth.
  • Prepare 3-4 PEI stories in depth - with answers to 5 follow-ups each.
  • Build the habit of looking at data calmly for Solve.

Mistakes to avoid
