Bain & Company (BCN) interview questions and answers
Guesstimates
According to reports, your assumptions and structure matter more than the exact number.
1.Guesstimate: how many vada pavs are sold in Mumbai in a day?
- What they're checking
- Structured estimation.
- How to answer
- Population (~2 crore) x people who eat vada pav (%) x how often per week / 7. Or from supply: stalls x daily sales. Check with both and keep stating assumptions.
2.What do you do if one of your guesstimate assumptions turns out wrong?
- What they're checking
- Flexibility.
- How to answer
- Accept the interviewer's data, recalculate only that part, and say how much the answer changed - don't start over.
Cases and business basics
3.A private equity client wants to buy a chain of dental clinics - what would you look at?
- What they're checking
- BCN supports private equity.
- How to answer
- The market (size, growth), competition, the chain's performance (revenue per clinic, margins), risks (dentists leaving, regulation), and the deal's value. Where you would get data for each part.
4.An e-commerce company's repeat customers are falling - why?
- What they're checking
- A customer case.
- How to answer
- Break down the customer journey: product/price, delivery, returns, app experience, competition. Find from data which cohort is falling, then form a hypothesis.
5.How do you calculate the break-even point?
- What they're checking
- Business maths.
- How to answer
- Fixed cost / (price per unit - variable cost per unit) = the units at which there is neither profit nor loss. Give a small example.
6.Apply Porter's five forces to the food delivery industry.
- What they're checking
- Using a framework properly.
- How to answer
- Threat of new players, restaurants' power, customers' power (easy to switch), substitutes (going yourself, cooking), and rivalry. The 'so what' of each force.
Analyst skills
7.What does a BCN Analyst do day to day?
- What they're checking
- Understanding the role.
- How to answer
- Industry research, cleaning and analysing data (Excel), making charts and slides, and quick answers to case teams' questions. Both research and data.
8.What is the difference between VLOOKUP and INDEX-MATCH (or XLOOKUP) in Excel?
- What they're checking
- An analyst's basic tool.
- How to answer
- VLOOKUP looks only in the left column and returns from the right, with a fixed column number. INDEX-MATCH/XLOOKUP work in any direction and don't break when columns are added.
9.What is an 'action title' on a PowerPoint slide?
- What they're checking
- Consulting communication.
- How to answer
- A title that states the slide's main finding in one line - 'Online sales doubled in 2 years' - not just 'Online sales'.
10.What is your strategy for an online test with negative marking?
- What they're checking
- Negative marking has been reported.
- How to answer
- Easy questions first, guess only when you can eliminate 2 options, and don't spend too long on any one question.
Fit
11.Why BCN, and why do you like a particular sector (such as financial services)?
- What they're checking
- Reports mention being asked the reason for a sector choice.
- How to answer
- BCN's mix of research + data, and a real reason for the sector - an internship, a project or your studies. If it differs from your background, explain the bridge.
12.What was your own contribution in the leadership role on your resume?
- What they're checking
- Resume deep dive.
- How to answer
- Your own work, not the team's - what you decided, what you did, and the result (with numbers).
