MathWorks interview questions - a complete guide
MathWorks' Engineering Development Group (EDG) trains freshers and then places them in teams. Here is preparation for matrices, numbers and engineering thinking alongside coding.
About MathWorks
MathWorks makes MATLAB and Simulink - used by engineers and scientists to design and simulate cars, aircraft, signals and AI models. Its India office is in Bengaluru, and freshers usually join through the EDG program.
This guide covers 13 MathWorks interview questions with answers - what each question checks and how to answer it - plus the MathWorks interview process, round by round, a 7-day preparation plan for freshers, tips and the mistakes to avoid.
MathWorks hiring process
Online assessment
Reported: 3 coding questions (medium-hard), or 2 coding + a short 'Why MathWorks' video answer.
Phone / video screen
A technical and resume conversation.
Hiring manager / behavioural
Team fit and motivation. Older campus reports also mention a group discussion.
MathWorks does not publish its India fresher interview process in detail (as of our check). This is based on candidate reports - many of them for experienced roles, so the fresher process can differ. Confirm with the recruiter.

MathWorks interview questions and answers
Coding and matrices
1.Rotate a square matrix 90 degrees clockwise in place.
- What they're checking
- Matrices - the world of MATLAB.
- How to answer
- Transpose first (swap a[i][j] and a[j][i]), then reverse each row. O(n^2) time, no extra memory.
2.How would you store and multiply a sparse matrix (mostly zeros)?
- What they're checking
- Thinking about efficiency.
- How to answer
- Keep only the non-zero values (row, col, value) - CSR format or a hash map. When multiplying, multiply only pairs where both are non-zero.
3.Is a 9x9 Sudoku board valid (ignoring empty cells)?
- What they're checking
- Clean use of sets.
- How to answer
- A set for each row, column and 3x3 box. Box index = (r/3)*3 + c/3. Any repeated number means invalid.
4.Find all the peaks (local maxima) in a signal array.
- What they're checking
- A simple signal-processing problem.
- How to answer
- Indices where the value is larger than both neighbours; handle the edges separately. Ask the interviewer about flat peaks (equal values).
5.Write a function to compute an integral with the trapezoidal rule.
- What they're checking
- Numerical methods.
- How to answer
- Divide the range into n parts, h = (b - a)/n. Sum = h * (f(a)/2 + f(a+h) + ... + f(b)/2). Larger n gives better accuracy.
Engineering thinking
6.Why don't we compare two floating point numbers with ==?
- What they're checking
- Numerical correctness - essential at MathWorks.
- How to answer
- 0.1 + 0.2 isn't exactly 0.3. Use abs(a - b) < tolerance, and a relative tolerance for large numbers.
7.What is vectorization in MATLAB, and why is it faster than a loop?
- What they're checking
- Understanding MATLAB.
- How to answer
- One operation on a whole array at once (like y = x.^2) - optimised compiled code runs inside, without the interpreter's per-element overhead.
8.In what order would you run the blocks of a block diagram like Simulink?
- What they're checking
- A dependency graph + loops.
- How to answer
- Build a graph of blocks and connections and run them in topological order. If there is a loop without a delay (an algebraic loop), raise an error or use a special solver - mention this case.
9.What unit tests would you write for a function that computes a matrix inverse?
- What they're checking
- Testing mindset.
- How to answer
- The identity's inverse is the identity; A * inv(A) is about I (with a tolerance); a proper error for a singular matrix; 1x1 and larger random matrices.
10.A user says your function's result is wrong - how would you debug it?
- What they're checking
- Customers are engineers - listen to them carefully.
- How to answer
- Reproduce it with their exact input, work out a small case by hand, check precision/tolerance, and add a test with the fix.
Behavioural
11.What would you say in a 60-90 second 'Why MathWorks' video?
- What they're checking
- Reported in the OA.
- How to answer
- One line about yourself, real work you did with MATLAB/Simulink (a lab, a project), and why you want to learn in EDG. Look at the camera, don't read.
12.When did you learn something completely new in a short time to finish work?
- What they're checking
- EDG is training-based - learning speed matters.
- How to answer
- What you learned, how (docs, small experiments), and the result.
13.How would you speak on the GD topic 'Will AI replace engineers?'
- What they're checking
- A GD has come up in older campus reports.
- How to answer
- A clear position, 2 points with examples, respectful answers to others, and a summary at the end. Being the loudest doesn't matter.
7-day preparation plan for the MathWorks interview
- Day 1: Matrix problems - five.
- Day 2: Arrays, strings and hashing - medium/hard.
- Day 3: Graphs - topological order and cycles.
- Day 4: Numerical basics - floating point, integration, tolerance.
- Day 5: Redo a small MATLAB or Simulink project/lab.
- Day 6: Record a 'Why MathWorks' video + behavioural stories.
- Day 7: A timed OA mock (three problems).
Preparation tips
- Practise matrix problems (rotate, spiral, search) specifically.
- Understand the basics of floating point, tolerance and numerical methods.
- Use MATLAB/Simulink a little - a free trial or a college licence.
- Record your video answer on your phone 2-3 times and watch it.
Mistakes to avoid
- Reading a script for the video answer.
- Comparing floating point values with ==.
- Not even knowing what MATLAB/Simulink are.
