Mechanical engineer interview questions and answers
Core mechanical interviews test fundamentals from your degree, practical manufacturing sense and how well you know your own project. These are the questions asked most, with what each one checks.
What to revise before the interview
- Thermodynamics: laws, cycles (Otto, Diesel, Rankine)
- Strength of materials: stress, strain, Hooke's law
- Material science: properties, heat treatment
- Manufacturing: casting, welding, machining
- IC engines: 2-stroke vs 4-stroke
- Fluid mechanics and heat transfer basics
- Drawing, GD&T and tolerances
- CAD/CAE tools: AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, ANSYS
1.State the laws of thermodynamics.
- What they're checking
- Fundamentals - asked in most core interviews.
- How to answer
- Zeroth: thermal equilibrium defines temperature. First: energy is conserved. Second: heat flows from hot to cold, and no engine is 100% efficient. Third: entropy approaches a minimum as temperature approaches absolute zero.
2.What is the difference between stress and strain?
- What they're checking
- Strength of materials basics.
- How to answer
- Stress is internal force per unit area; strain is deformation per unit length. Within the elastic limit, stress is proportional to strain (Hooke's law), and the ratio is Young's modulus.
3.2-stroke vs 4-stroke engines?
- What they're checking
- Applied knowledge.
- How to answer
- A 4-stroke completes a cycle in two crankshaft revolutions with separate intake, compression, power and exhaust strokes; a 2-stroke does it in one revolution - lighter and simpler but less fuel-efficient and more polluting.
4.What is heat treatment? Name a few processes.
- What they're checking
- Material science.
- How to answer
- Controlled heating and cooling to change a metal's properties. Annealing softens, hardening (quenching) increases hardness, tempering reduces brittleness after hardening, normalising refines grain structure.
5.Explain the difference between casting and forging.
- What they're checking
- Manufacturing processes.
- How to answer
- Casting pours molten metal into a mould - good for complex shapes. Forging shapes heated metal with force - stronger parts with better grain flow, such as crankshafts.
6.What is GD&T, and why is it used?
- What they're checking
- Drawing and quality knowledge valued in industry.
- How to answer
- Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing defines allowed variation in form, orientation and location of features, so parts fit and function even when made by different suppliers.
7.What are the modes of heat transfer?
- What they're checking
- Basics.
- How to answer
- Conduction (through solids), convection (by fluid movement) and radiation (by electromagnetic waves, no medium needed). Give an everyday example of each.
8.Which CAD software have you used, and for what?
- What they're checking
- Practical skills.
- How to answer
- Name the tool and a real use - modelling parts for your project, creating assembly drawings or running a simple stress analysis in ANSYS.
9.Explain your final-year project.
- What they're checking
- Depth and ownership - the most important question for freshers.
- How to answer
- The problem, your design, calculations, materials, how you built and tested it, the result and what you'd improve. Expect deep follow-ups on any formula you mention.
10.Why do you want to work in a core company and not IT?
- What they're checking
- Commitment to the field.
- How to answer
- Give a genuine reason - interest in manufacturing, design or automobiles, an internship you enjoyed - and show you've thought about the career path.

Frequently asked questions
What subjects are most important for mechanical interviews?
Thermodynamics, strength of materials, manufacturing processes, material science, machine design and your project. Revise the basics deeply rather than everything superficially.
Do core companies ask about software?
Often - CAD tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks or CATIA, and sometimes ANSYS or basic MATLAB, depending on the role.
Can mechanical engineers apply for IT jobs?
Yes. Most IT services companies hire from all branches, testing aptitude, coding basics and communication.
