Bank job interview questions

Bank job interview questions and answers

Bank interviews - for PO and clerk posts and for private bank roles - mix personal questions, banking awareness and customer situations. These are the questions asked most, with what each one checks.

What to revise before the interview

  • Why banking, and why this bank
  • Your graduation subject and hometown
  • KYC and AML basics
  • NPA, CASA, CRR, SLR and the repo rate
  • RBI's role and monetary policy
  • Digital banking: UPI, NEFT, RTGS, IMPS
  • Financial inclusion schemes
  • Current banking news
  1. 1.Why do you want to join banking?

    What they're checking
Motivation - asked in almost every bank interview.
    How to answer
Be specific: job stability, serving customers, the growth path, banking's role in the economy - connected to something from your own background. Avoid only "job security".
  2. 2.What is KYC, and why is it important?

    What they're checking
    Basic compliance knowledge.
    How to answer
Know Your Customer: verifying identity and address with documents such as Aadhaar and PAN. It prevents fraud, money laundering and terrorist financing.
  3. 3.What is an NPA?

    What they're checking
    Core banking concept.
    How to answer
A non-performing asset is a loan where interest or principal has been overdue beyond the period set by RBI norms (generally 90 days for term loans). High NPAs hurt a bank's profits and capital.
  4. 4.What is CASA, and why do banks want a high CASA ratio?

    What they're checking
    Understanding bank business.
    How to answer
Current and savings account deposits. They cost banks less than fixed deposits, so a higher CASA ratio lowers the cost of funds and improves margins.
  5. 5.Explain CRR, SLR and the repo rate.

    What they're checking
    Banking awareness.
    How to answer
CRR is the share of deposits banks keep with the RBI as cash; SLR is the share they keep in liquid assets such as government securities; the repo rate is the rate at which the RBI lends to banks. Check the current rates before your interview - they change.
  6. 6.NEFT vs RTGS vs IMPS vs UPI?

    What they're checking
    Digital banking knowledge.
    How to answer
NEFT settles in batches; RTGS settles large-value transfers in real time; IMPS and UPI are instant, any time, with UPI working through a virtual payment address on mobile apps.
  7. 7.A customer is angry about a wrong deduction. What do you do?

    What they're checking
    Customer handling.
    How to answer
Listen calmly, apologise for the trouble, check the account details, explain the reason or raise a complaint with a reference number and timeline, and follow up.
  8. 8.What is financial inclusion? Name a scheme.

    What they're checking
    Awareness of banking's social role.
    How to answer
Bringing banking services to people who lack them. Examples include Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana for basic accounts and schemes for small loans and insurance.
  9. 9.What recent banking news have you read?

    What they're checking
    Preparation and interest.
    How to answer
Pick one or two recent items from a reliable source, explain them simply and say why they matter for banks or customers. Read the news daily for two weeks before the interview.
  10. 10.Are you willing to work in rural branches?

    What they're checking
Public sector banks post officers across the country.
    How to answer
Answer honestly and positively if you can: rural postings are part of the job and a chance to learn how banking serves different customers.
