Cybersecurity analyst interview questions
Cybersecurity analyst interview questions and answers
Security analyst interviews test your grasp of attacks and defences, and how you'd respond when an alert fires. These are the questions asked most, with what each one checks.
What to revise before the interview
- The CIA triad
- Common attacks: phishing, malware, SQL injection, XSS, DDoS
- Networking: TCP/IP, ports, DNS, firewalls
- Encryption, hashing and certificates
- SIEM, logs and alert triage
- Incident response phases
- Vulnerability scanning and patching
- OWASP Top 10
1.What is the CIA triad?
- What they're checking
- The foundation of security.
- How to answer
- Confidentiality (only authorised access), Integrity (data isn't altered improperly) and Availability (systems work when needed). Give an example of an attack on each.
2.Encryption vs hashing?
- What they're checking
- Core concept often confused.
- How to answer
- Encryption is reversible with a key and protects data you need to read later; hashing is one-way and is used for passwords (with a salt and a slow algorithm like bcrypt) and integrity checks.
3.How does a phishing attack work, and how do you defend against it?
- What they're checking
- The most common real-world attack.
- How to answer
- A fake message tricks users into clicking a link or sharing credentials. Defences: email filtering, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, MFA, user training and an easy way to report suspicious emails.
4.What is SQL injection, and how is it prevented?
- What they're checking
- Web application security basics.
- How to answer
- Attacker input is run as part of a database query. Prevent it with parameterised queries, input validation and least-privilege database accounts.
5.You see many failed logins followed by a success from a new country. What do you do?
- What they're checking
- SOC triage thinking.
- How to answer
- Treat it as a possible account compromise: check the source IP and user's history, confirm with the user, disable the session or reset the password, enforce MFA, and look for other accounts targeted from the same source.
6.What are the phases of incident response?
- What they're checking
- Process knowledge.
- How to answer
- Preparation, identification, containment, eradication, recovery and lessons learned. Stress documentation throughout.
7.IDS vs IPS?
- What they're checking
- Network defence tools.
- How to answer
- An intrusion detection system alerts on suspicious traffic; an intrusion prevention system sits inline and can block it.
8.What is a SIEM used for?
- What they're checking
- Daily SOC tooling.
- How to answer
- It collects logs from many sources, correlates events and raises alerts - for example Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel or QRadar. Analysts triage those alerts and hunt for threats.
9.How do you prioritise vulnerabilities?
- What they're checking
- Risk-based thinking.
- How to answer
- By severity (CVSS) adjusted for real risk: is it exposed to the internet, is it being exploited in the wild, how critical is the asset. Patch exploited, exposed, critical issues first.
10.How do you keep up with security news?
- What they're checking
- Curiosity - essential in a fast-moving field.
- How to answer
- Name real sources you follow - CERT-In advisories, vendor blogs, security newsletters - and a recent incident you read about and what you learned.
Frequently asked questions
How can a fresher start in cybersecurity?
Learn networking and Linux, practise on legal labs (TryHackMe, Hack The Box), and consider a starter certification such as CompTIA Security+. SOC analyst roles are a common entry point.
What certifications help for security jobs?
CompTIA Security+ for beginners, CEH for ethical hacking roles, and later CISSP or OSCP depending on your path.
Do security interviews include practical tests?
Often - analysing logs or a phishing email, explaining an attack in a packet capture, or a scenario-based triage question.
